Review & Giveaway: Under the Snow by Melissa Stewart

  • Reading level: Ages 4-8

  • Where do animals go in the winter?   Under the Snow by Melissa Stewart, illustrated by Constance Bergum describes the hidden world of animals during the cold wintery months.

For example, ladybugs pack themselves together to keep warm. Chipmunks burrow & sleep for up to a few days at a time. Bumblebees, under the cover of a rotted log, remain silent and still until Spring. Did you know that a wood frog can freeze solid & still survive?

Under the Snow is the perfect book for yoru budding biologist or any child interested in animals.  It details, through lyrical text & elaborate illustrations, how nature’s smallest citizens survive the cold. While geared for 4-8 year olds, I think children of all ages would enjoy this one. My eleven-year-old enjoyed it as much, if not more, as his five year old brother.  My boys were very familiar with the concept of hibernation, but had no idea of the number of animals “awake” during the cold months.

I plan on giving our copy of this book to my son’s teacher to accompany their studies of winter.  I think it’s a book that should have a place in every library, it’s so full of information, relayed in a way that interests children.

I’m excited to have an extra copy of Under the Snow to give away to one reader.  To enter, please fill out the form below.  The winner will be announced Friday, December 17th. As I will be shipping the book myself this contest is open to citizens of the US & Canada only.  Good luck to all who enter!

Review: The Snow Globe by Sheila Roberts

  • Kylie Gray is browsing in an antique store when she comes across a snow globe. The store owner explains the story behind the globe: the original owner lost his wife (and son) during childbirth, right before Christmas.  He grieved for some time, he’d lost his reason for living. He received the snow globe as a gift. When he looked in the glass, he saw an image of a woman who would eventually mend his broken heart.  That “fortune” came true, so the globe was passed on to someone else needing a miracle.  The globe has been passed around for generations, always landing in the hands of someone who needed it most.

Kylie decides to buy the snow globe even thought its a bit out of her budget.  She’s been unlucky at love (and employment) for some time now and feels it can’t hurt to try at hope.

Kylie explains the story of the snow globe to her two best friends, who were shopping in nearby stores.  Suzanne is the busy mom of a young daughter.  She & her husband have the perfect house but Suzanne is working herself to death so they can afford it. Allison comes from a dysfunctional family.  Her grandmother, her only true family in her eyes, passed away a few years ago and Allison is lost without her.

Both Allison & Suzanne disregard the story.  Kylie herself seems to doubt its power, but days later she glances at the snow globe and sees the image of a toy shop that looked to be in Pike Place Market in nearby Seattle.  Kylie calls Allison, the one least likely to believe she is crazy for what she’s seen, and they head off to Seattle in search for the toy shop.

When they arrive, the toy shop does in fact exist. It is owned by Craig, a young, handsome man.  The two go for coffee & soon realize they were meant to meet.  Craig wants to create a web site for the store to generate additional traffic; Kylie designs web sites. Could it be? Could the snow globe really hold the power it’s rumored to have? Were Kylie & Craig destined to meet? Kylie isn’t the only one who is granted a gift from the snow globe; Allison & Suzanne are eventually & reluctantly rewarded as well.

The Snow Globe is the perfect book to read during the holiday season. It reminds us all how important family is, and the balance of family, work, friends & love. At just under 200 pages, it is a light, quick read, perfect for a cold winter’s night.  It would make the perfect stocking stuffer for someone needing a bit of the holiday spirit this season!

Frightful Friday: The Immortals by J.T. Ellison

Frightful Friday is a weekly meme in which I feature a particularly scary or chilling book that I’ve read that week. Feel free to grab the button & join in!  Be sure to include a link to your post in the Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post!

The book I’m featuring this week is The Immortals by J.T. Ellison

  • Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Mira; 1 edition (October 1, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 0778327639
  • Source: Planned Television Arts-Ruder Finn
  • It’s Samhain, known as Halloween to “regular” folk.  Eight teenagers are found dead in their homes, their bodies carved with an occult symbol. Taylor Jackson was only recently reinstated as lieutenant of the homicide squad in Nashville, and with no time to adjust, she’s forced into this grisely set of murders.  Understandably, the families of the victims are upset and devastated so Jackson must find the killer-and fast!

The Immortals is the fifth book in the Taylor Jackson series and it may very well be my favorite.  The author delves quite deftly into the occult, goth & witchcraft cultures.  The parallel storyline involving Jackson’s boyfriend, Baldwin, is quite fascinating as well.  He’s pulled away from Jackson when she needs him most to testify in DC about his former partner-turned serial killer.

One of the many things I love about this series is Taylor Jackson.  A truly compelling character, Jackson is intensely strong, both physically & emotionally, a characteristic I love to see in women of crime fiction.

As mentioned above, this is the fifth book the Taylor Jackson series.  While The Immortals could stand its own ground and serve as a stand-alone, after reading it you’ll want to go back and reread the other books in the series to learn more about Jackson & her past.

It’s obvious that Ellison did her research on the topics of occult, witchcraft, and the goth scene.  She includes a bibliography of sources at the end of the book in the event her readers want to learn more.

I highly recommend this book and the entire Taylor Jackson series!

Note: this book includes graphic scenes of a sexual nature

Guest Post & Giveaway: CJ Lyons, Author of the Angels of Mercy Series

I’m excited to welcome CJ Lyons, author of the phenomenal Angels of Mercy series, to post today!

    The Voices in My Head

One thing about being a full-time author, now no one looks at me funny when I tell them I’m busy listening to the voices in my head!(that never happened when I was still a pediatric ER doc, lol!)

But I don’t only hear my own characters. When I read, I hear the words on the page and the characters’ voices as well. So it was a huge shock to me when a discussion on a list-serve revealed that I was in the minority. That most people don’t hear ANY voices while they read.

I’ve always been a student of psychology and love the way personality tests reveal telling insights on our behavior. One of the most marked traits revealed by the Myers-Briggs test is two ways of seeing the world: sensing and intuitive.

Sensing types experience the world via their senses: what they see, feel, smell, touch, hear. Intuitives experience the world from the inside out–they see patterns and possibilities and apply those to the outside world (in a broad sense, this is the difference between “detail” folks and “big picture” folks–but there’s a broad spectrum, of course!). The general population is estimated to be 75% sensing and 25% intuitive.

I’ve taken the MB several times and every time scored 100% intuitive (hey, someone has to be on the edge of the bell-shaped curve, right?) The psychologists who were giving the test to my med school class were highly relieved that I wasn’t planning a career as a surgeon.  Translating this division of perception to readers, I wonder if there aren’t two kinds of readers out there?

Sensing type readers use the details the author provides to build the world of the novel and “see” the story, like a movie projected onto a screen.  And intuitive type readers who “fall into the world” of the story and “feel” it unfold, creating the world with the author by filling in possible details on their own.

What do you think? Are you a sensing reader or an intuitive one? Is a book like a movie for you, where you’re an observer at a distance? Do you hear voices in your head and feel like you’re part of the story? There’s no right or wrong answer, of course! But isn’t it amazing how differently we can all experience the same story?

And if you want to take a quick version of the M-B and see where you fall, check this site out: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

    Thanks for reading!
    CJ

2010 Virtual Advent Tour: The Magic of Christmas

I’m so excited to be able to participate in the Virtual Advent tour again this year. Here’s a bit of history about the tour:

Kailana from The Written World and Marg from Adventures of an Intrepid Reader are hosting the tour for the fifth year.

The Virtual Advent tour first started when they pondered why should the kids get all the fun of opening a box on the advent calendar and finding a treat in there, and how could we have some blogging fun with a similar concept? And so the Virtual Advent Tour was created!

Last year, I wrote about my favorite Christmas memory: when my husband John & I got married.  This year, I was planning on doing a review of a Christmas book, but changed my mind after having a discussion about the magic of Christmas with my eleven-year-old son, John.

Many of John’s friends no longer believe in Santa. This concept devastated John.  When he asked me if Santa was real, I told him the truth: Santa is part of the magic of Christmas.  This discussion made me think about just how magical this season is and I started creating in my mind a list of things I love about this season.  So…without further ado:

    1. SNOW! I can’t help it, I love snow.  I lived the majority of my adolescence in the Chicago area.  You can’t avoid snow there.  Snow makes me happy, it brings out the child in me.  And yes, I can still love snow, even after the Snowpocalypse that hit us last year!

    2. The coming together of family.  Family is of utmost importance to me.  I don’t always get to see my family as often as I’d like, but I can be sure to be able to spend time with my family this time of year.

    3. Seeing Christmas through the eyes of my boys.  They are so excited about Christmas and not just because they get presents.  We all love to watch the classic Christmas movies together & read Christmas books every evening.  Christmas adds a sparkle to the eyes of all children, no matter the age.

    4. COOKIES!! Christmas cookies are a big deal in our house. It has become a tradition for the boys to bake Christmas cookies with my mother, a tradition that I hope continues for some time.

    5. Celebrating my anniversary with my husband.  This day that forever changed my world is celebrated during my favorite season of the year. I think it’s very fitting!  When we got married I worried that our anniversary would be forgotten in the hustle & bustle of the season.  My husband, the amazing man he is, never lets that happen.  We plan a night out together every year, no matter how busy we are, to celebrate the life we have created together.

So there you have it! The top 5 things I love about this season!  Be sure to check out the Virtual Advent Tour blog for posts throughout this month! Happy Holidays!

Review: Critical Condition by CJ Lyons

  • Paperback: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Jove; Original edition (November 30, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 0515148687
  • Source: Publisher
  • The staff of Angels of Mercy Medical Center are still recovering after a shooting that took place at the hospital, severely injuring Detective Jerry Boyle, Dr. Gina Freeman’s fiance.  The hitman was after ER physician Lydia Fiore, who escaped with minor injuries.  Fiore holds secrets that someone is attempting to bury. The hitman escaped.

It’s New Year’s Eve & a severe blizzard has cut the hospital off from the outside world.  When a DEA agent appears, looking for Fiore, some of the staff realize something is amiss.  While they attempt to verify the agent’s identity, the hotel loses power & contact with the outside world.  The “agent” turns out to be another hitman out to kill Fiore. Unknown to the hitman, Fiore isn’t in the hospital; she’s stranded out in the snow.

The lives of hundreds of patients & doctors are at risk.  The hitman has no problem with taking extra victims in the course of his “mission.”  It is unknown just how many of the Angels of Mercy staff will make it into the new year…

The final book in the Angels of Mercy series, Critical Condition serves as the perfect conclusion to such a wonderful series.  Through the series, the main characters have grown & developed tremendously.  We follow them through their medical career, experiencing their triumphs and troubles alongside them.  This series has been a favorite of mine for years; while I enjoyed this book I was sad to see the series in.  I literally put off reading it til the last minute, just to postpone the inevitable.

As I mentioned in my review of the first book in the series, Lifelines, this series is perfect for fans of medical thrillers/drama.  The storyline is fast-paced & exciting, the characters are compelling.  You won’t go wrong with this series, I promise!

Stay tuned! Tomorrow I’m excited to have the author, CJ Lyons, as a guest on this blog!

    Review: Lifelines by CJ Lyons

  • Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: Berkley (March 4, 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 0425220826
  • Source: Personal copy
  • July 1st is always considered the most dangerous day of the year; recently graduated medical students begin their internships on this day. It’s also the first day for Dr. Lydia Fiore, the new ER attending physician.  Recently transferred from Los Angeles, Fiore’s first day is met with drama & tragedy, for the chief of surgery’s son, Jonah Weiss, dies under her watch. He arrived in the ER, a victim of a car accident, no evidence of an injury.

Fiore is instantly suspended, pending an investigation. She is forced to learn the truth about Jonah’s death in order to save her career. Her “investigation” proves to be quite dangerous and her life, and the life of several others, are at risk.  Jonah death wasn’t related to his car accident; his activity in a gay rights protests seem to be involved.   But how many people will die before the the truth is revealed?

Lifelines isn’t your typical medical thriller.  It has everything: drama, romance, crime, all tucked into a hospital setting.  The author’s extremely well-developed characters really add to the storyline.  Amanda is a Southern belle with medical problems she keeps hidden from everyone else; Gina is a strong-willed & minded resident.  Nora is a charge nurse with a fierce & firey temper. All four women, including, Dr. Fiore, are incredibly dedicated strong women.

Lyon’s experience in the medical field as a flight physician and in numerous trama centers is portrayed well in her writing. Fans of TV medical dramas like ER and Grey’s Anatomy as well as fiction medical dramas, will enjoy this series.  Stay tuned for later this week I will review the other books in the Angels of Mercy series!
