Review: The Snow Globe by Sheila Roberts

Kylie Gray is browsing in an antique store when she comes across a snow globe. The store owner explains the story behind the globe: the original owner lost his wife (and son) during childbirth, right before Christmas.  He grieved for some time, he’d lost his reason for living. He received the snow globe as a gift. When he looked in the glass, he saw an image of a woman who would eventually mend his broken heart.  That “fortune” came true, so the globe was passed on to someone else needing a miracle.  The globe has been passed around for generations, always landing in the hands of someone who needed it most.

Kylie decides to buy the snow globe even thought its a bit out of her budget.  She’s been unlucky at love (and employment) for some time now and feels it can’t hurt to try at hope.  

Kylie explains the story of the snow globe to her two best friends, who were shopping in nearby stores.  Suzanne is the busy mom of a young daughter.  She & her husband have the perfect house but Suzanne is working herself to death so they can afford it. Allison comes from a dysfunctional family.  Her grandmother, her only true family in her eyes, passed away a few years ago and Allison is lost without her.

Both Allison & Suzanne disregard the story.  Kylie herself seems to doubt its power, but days later she glances at the snow globe and sees the image of a toy shop that looked to be in Pike Place Market in nearby Seattle.  Kylie calls Allison, the one least likely to believe she is crazy for what she’s seen, and they head off to Seattle in search for the toy shop.

When they arrive, the toy shop does in fact exist. It is owned by Craig, a young, handsome man.  The two go for coffee & soon realize they were meant to meet.  Craig wants to create a web site for the store to generate additional traffic; Kylie designs web sites. Could it be? Could the snow globe really hold the power it’s rumored to have? Were Kylie & Craig destined to meet? Kylie isn’t the only one who is granted a gift from the snow globe; Allison & Suzanne are eventually & reluctantly rewarded as well.

The Snow Globe is the perfect book to read during the holiday season. It reminds us all how important family is, and the balance of family, work, friends & love. At just under 200 pages, it is a light, quick read, perfect for a cold winter’s night.  It would make the perfect stocking stuffer for someone needing a bit of the holiday spirit this season!
