Teaser Tuesday: Dismantled by Jennifer McMahon

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week comes from Dismantled: A Novel by Jennifer McMahon:

We will change the world by taking it apart, dismantling it piece by piece.  Break it down.  Tear it up.  Only then can we be truly free. (pg. 127)

Review:The Enemy by Lee Child

  • Audiobook
  • ISBN-10: 0440245990
  • Source: I bought it!
  • In the eighth book of the Jack Reacher series, we flashback to 1990.  Reacher is a twenty-nine year old military police major for the 110th special unit. The Soviet Union is about to collapse and, with the Cold War at an end, the military faces a reduction in force.  The body of a two-star general is found in a seedy hotel near the base.  He appears to have experienced a heart attack. Reacher, recently reassigned to Fort Bird, NC is assigned to the case.  The general’s briefcase is missing, inside was an agenda to a very secretive meeting.  When the general’s wife is found bludgeoned to death just a few hours later, Reacher realizes the general’s death can’t be attributed to natural causes.  A third body is also found, the body of a gay soldier who was killed in a horrific manner. His superiors want Reacher to report this as  training accident.  During his investigations, Reacher learns his counterparts at 20 other bases were reassigned at the same time he was, December 29th.  Clearly something is going on, for who would exert the power required to accomplish a reassignment of this magnitude?

Reacher has a lot to deal with in his personal life as well. His mother, who lives in France, admits to Reacher and his older brother Joe that she is dying of cancer and doesn’t have much time to live. This foray into his personal life gives long-time fans of the Reacher books a rare glimpse of the personal side of Jack Reacher.  What transpires between Reacher and his brother in this book further explains their relationship in previous books.

When I started listening to this book, I was a bit wary of the flashback.  Ultimately, however, I was able to gain a better understanding of Reacher as a person as well as his motives.  As always, Child really delivers with this one.  His books never fail to impress me. They are consistently full of plot twists, action and intrigue.  The Enemy probably has more political commentary than the other Reacher books I have read thus far; this was a change that I really enjoyed.

Tales of a (Formerly) Reluctant Reader: Visit by Eric Wight, Author of the Frankie Pickle Books

John was very excited to receive an email from Eric Wight, author of the Frankie Pickle books Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 3000 and Frankie Pickle and the Closet of Doom.  Eric was impressed with one of John’s reviews and asked if John was interested in reviewing the Frankie Pickle books.  This was the first email from an author John has received, so after he stopped jumping up and down, he said yes.

I began an email conversation with Eric and after months of planning we arranged for him to visit John’s school! John attends a Title 1 school (a large percentage of the kids require free or reduced lunch) and many of the children don’t have access to books other than the school library.  So when they heard that a real live author was coming to visit they were thrilled beyond belief!

Eric started off his visit by reading from his newest book, Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 3000.

Eric then showed the children how he drew Frankie Pickle:

The kids were amazed to see Frankie come to life before their eyes!  They then moved on to the part of the event they enjoyed the most: they got the opportunity to come up with their own Frankie Pickle story!   Eric showed the children the key aspects of a story: the who, what, when, & where. After much discussion, they decided that Frankie would be a runway model, in China, in the winter.  That’s what you get when you ask a bunch of elementary school kids for suggestions :). Eric did an outstanding job of drawing this impromptu scene!

Eric wrapped up the event by answering questions from the children.  They asked him a wide range of questions, from how he came up with the idea for Frankie Pickle to what he liked most about being a writer.

After the event, Eric had a book signing.  He took the time to speak to each of the twenty-five kids who had purchased a book, writing a personalized statement for each of them in their book. Most of the children were stunned to silence, one child even gave Eric a Pokemon card (a valued possession!).

Following is a picture of John getting his book signed:

The teachers and children had so much fun! We already have plans for Eric to return next spring to celebrate the release of his third Frankie Pickle book! Thank you so much Eric and Trish from Hooray for Books  (our local indie children’s book store!) for making this event happen!

Following are John’s comments about the visit:

When my mom told me that an author read one of my reviews and wanted me to review his books I was very excited.  I’ve never received an email from an author before!  But then, she told me he was coming to our school.  I was excited and nervous.  I was excited because I was going to be famous! The kids at school were so impressed that I new an author who wrote a real book!  I was nervous because what would happen if I didn’t like the books?  My mom told me not to worry, that Mr. Wight would come visit my school no matter what.  I didn’t have to worry, because I love the books!  I’m reading Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 3000 right now.  I really enjoy it because I’m in Cub Scouts, and earlier in the year I participated in the pinewood derby!  I don’t want to tell you too much about it, you’ll have to wait for my review!

My favorite part of Mr. Wight’s visit was part where he drew the story that we came up with.  I wanted to Frankie to be a ninja, but that’s ok.  I also liked when he signed my books! I was nervous because I hadn’t finished them yet.  It takes me a little longer to read books than the other kids in my class.  I was worried Mr. Wight would ask me what I thought of his books. Instead, he asked me what my favorite books were. I froze, and said the first books that came to my mind: Dr. Seuss! Dr. Seuss!?  I think I had that in my mind because Mr. Wight said he was one of his favorite authors.  Anyway, even though I totally embarrased myself, I had a great time and can’t wait for Mr. Wight to come back again!  Stay tuned for my review of Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 3000!

Waiting on Wednesday: They’re Watching by Gregg Hurwitz

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

    About the book:

All Patrick Davis ever wanted to do was make movies.  But after he got his big break and sold his first screenplay, his life collapsed. His Hollywood dreams crumble almost immediately, sending him back to his dreary day job, and also he finds his storybook marriage on the rocks.

Then, ominous DVDs start being delivered to him. DVDs which show that someone is watching him and his wife, that the two of them are being stalked and recorded by cameras hidden around and within their house.  Next the e-mails start, and someone offers to fix everything, to take the mess his life has become and make it all right. Patrick figures it’s the offer of a lifetime.

But Patrick couldn’t be more wrong.  With every step he is deeper and deeper into a web of intrigue that threatens everything he still has and values in this world.  Before he knows it, he’s in and in deep – and the only way out is to outwit and outplay his unseen opponents at their own game.

Sounds exciting, right? I loved Hurwitz’s other books, Trust No One and The Crime Writer.  Although, I have to contribute my love of his writing to Jen Forbus from Jen’s Book Thoughts. I had his books in my library for some time.  When I met Jen earlier this year, she spoke of his writing. Boy oh boy! I didn’t realize I had two gems just waiting for me to read them.  I don’t know how long it would have taken me to get to them without Jen’s suggestions.  She’s a phenomenal reviewer of crime fiction. Oh, and she’s great at recommending books based on your prior reads.  There hasn’t been a book she’s suggested that I didn’t like.

Ok, back to the book! They’re Watching is published by St. Martin’s Press (one of my favorite publishers!) on July 6th!  Are you a fan of Hurwitz?  Follow him on Facebook and on Twitter, and be sure to check out his Web site!

Review: Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth

    • Hardcover: 400 pages
    • Publisher: Putnam Adult (May 18, 2010)
    • ISBN-10: 0399156356
    • Source: Publisher
    • Warnings: Mild gore, violence, language

Nathaniel Cade isn’t your typical secret agent-he’s a vampire who has been protecting the Presidential office for the past 140 years.  Cade was captured and was to be executed, but was pardoned by President Andrew Jackson. Sworn by a blood oath cast by a voodoo priestess, it is Cade’s duty to protect the President from any supernatural harm, things kept secret from the unsuspecting American public.

Zach Barrows is a White House staffer caught in a compromising position with the President’s daughter.  He’s now been assigned to work with Cade, and understandably daunting task.  The two are on a mission to stop Konrad, a German scientist whose work involves reanimating the dead, forming an indestructible army of the undead.

I won’t deny that I was a bit perplexed at first by the premise of Blood Oath and I’m undoubtedly not alone in that opinion. However, as I started to become absorbed in the book, I realized that this isn’t another one of those horrid attempts to blend monsters with popular fiction or classical literature.   There’s actually a pretty compelling and exciting storyline wrapped around it.  Farnswoth has done a tremendous amount of research for this book, quoting actual sources in his acknowledgments. In fact, the storyline would exist on it’s own, without the premise of a vampire secret agent, but in this case that just adds to the overall experience.

Cade’s character is an extremely easy to like.  I likened him to Angel (for all you Buffy fans!).  He was dealt a hard card in life but he’s doing his best to deal with it.  He experiences genuine emotions, he’s not some stone-cold killer.

Zach’s character was a bit annoying at first.  He literally wet himself when meeting Cade for the first time. I guess that’s to be expected, who knows how I would react in the same situation.  It is Zach who goes through the most dramatic transformation in the book.

One of the things I really enjoyed was the excerpts from the briefings book about Cade that start off each chapter.  They provide back story about the “Nightmare Pet” project, for which Cade is the subject. Some of them provide a bit of humor, specifically the one that is supposedly a transcript from tapes from Nixon’s Oval Office.

I enjoyed this book so much that I became obsessed with reading it; I devoted all of my down time to it.  I stayed up late at night and I awoke early in the morning to read it. I finished it in 24 hours, quite a feat for me considering it’s 400 page length! This is the first in a series of books revolving around the President’s Vampire himself, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next in the series! Considering Farnsworth is a scriptwriter, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a movie based on the book series.

I highly recommend this to fans of horror and political thrillers.  Fans of the Dresden Files or Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain would enjoy this.

    Today’s Wild Card author is:

    Dawn Miller

    and the book:

    The Prophecy

***Special thanks to Pam Mettler of ZonderKidz for sending me a review copy.***

    My Review:

Five children (Sam, Jonas, J, Carly, & Jenna) experience an event that forever changes not only their lives but mankind as a whole as well.  Unfortunately,  not one of them is able to recall just what transpired. Eventually, their friendships fade and they go their own separate ways.  Fast forward several years: Sam, the “leader” of the pack, begins to have nightmares that he can’t seem to get out of his mind. He contacts the rest of the group and one he realizes they are having similar nightmares, he suggests that they meet back up in New Orleans.

As each of the group trek back home for their reunion, they are faced with supernatural barriers attempting to stop them from reuniting, and from remembering what happened that evening so long ago.  They eventually discover that they are Watchers-humans caught in a battle between warrior angels who watch over mankind and fallen angels hell-bent on destroying life as we know it.They must come together as one to wage war against the fallen and help save mankind.

Although The Prophecy is labeled as young adult fiction, it would easily be appealing to an adult.  Miller did a fantastic job of pacing the storyline, building the suspense in such a way to keep you intrigued and interested. While the underlying storyline focuses on the power of faith, Miller portrays it in such a way to avoid being overtly preachy.  My only complaint would be the length of the book; I feel as though it could have been a bit shorter. The first part of the book seemed to drag a bit to me, but the last half of the book made up for it!  The last 100 pages or so are full of action and suspense. My only concern is that some readers might be dissuaded by the first half of the book and give up before it gets really good. Ideally, the excitement and energy that exists in the last half of the book should be carried through the entire novel.

That said, I still highly recommend this! As I stated above, this is technically a Christian fiction but doesn’t seem to be at first glance.  If you aren’t familiar with Christian fiction and have the desire to test the waters, this might be the book for you!
