Waiting on Wednesday: The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry

Map-of-True-Places-cover-web

I was thrilled when I received an email from Brunonia Barry announcing the upcoming release of her new book, The Map of True Places. I read and LOVED her first book, The Lace Reader and can’t wait to read more of her work. According to the email, The Map of True Places is “a story about relationships and family and finding your true place in the world when you have no map to follow.”

The release date is May 4th, but you can download the prologue here.

Mini-Review: The Devil in Merrivale by Jackie Griffey

merrivale

  • Paperback: 262 pages
  • Publisher: Zumaya Enigma (January 4, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 1934841846
  • Source: Publisher
  • While investigating a hostage scene at a local eatery, Sheriff Cas Larkin discovers the body of a local girl.  While investigating her death, he learns about a “club” at the local high school reminiscent of a satanic cult.  At the same time, his police force is investigating several cases of stolen and mutilated livestock. Instead of finding answers to his many questions, more questions regarding the cases pop up.  When the son of a local judge is implicated, it becomes extremely difficult for Cas to get his many questions answered.  He must rush to find the connection between the criminal activities going on in the seemingly quiet town of Merrivale.

The Devil in Merrivale is one of many “cozy mysteries” Griffey has written.  While I didn’t feel a close connection to the main characters, the storyline was full action and intrigue. It was interesting to see how small town politics came into play while the various crimes were being investigated.

    Review: Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

     48889211

  • Hardcover: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Amistad (January 5, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 006170654X
  • Source: Author
  • Wenchis set in the mid-19th century South.  It chronicles the tales of four slave women: Lizzy, Reenie, Sweet and Mawu, who all spend their summers with their masters Tawana house,  a free-state resort in Ohio. All four women share the same fate, a life of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their masters. Favorites of their masters, they each still crave the freedom from slavery.

The author does an outstanding job of bringing each character to life for the reader.  We feel their pain, their anguish, and very rarely, their happiness. Never before have I felt so drawn to the characters.  While there are parts that are brutal in their detail, these descriptions are completely necessary in order to understand the lives of each of the slave women.  I felt a whirlwind of emotions: fury, sadness, and grief. While I have read dozens of books chronicling slave life, never before have I read anything so real and so eloquently portrayed.

I highly recommend this book, especially to book clubs. There are so many topics to be discussed, the relationships between slave mistresses and their masters is just one of many.  I guarantee that you will fall in love with the writing and the characters, and by the end of the book, you will be craving  more.

Mini-Review & Giveaway: Blind Panic by Graham Masterton

44023555The entire United States is suddenly hit by a surge of mass blindness.  No one is immune, not even the most powerful man in the country.  Thousands upon thousands are killed when planes fall from the sky and cars plunge into one another. Masterton brings back characters from his first novel, The Manitou, including “psychic” Harry Erskine and Amelia Carlsson.  After conducting a séance, they discover Misquamacus, a.k.a He Who Went and Came Back, an ancient Algonquin medicine man, has returned to seek vengeance for all the wrongs committed by “the white man.” Masterton does an outstanding job with this apocalyptic tale.  Although this isn’t the first he writes about these characters, Blind Panic can serve as a stand-alone novel.  The back story is sufficiently filled in without seeming to drag on.  Highly recommended.

    Contains: mild gore

To enter to win a brand new paperback copy of Blind Panic, please complete this form.  Winner will be announced on Friday, January 29th.

Waiting on Wednesday: Dark Life by Kat Falls

    cover

I read about Dark Life on Abby the Librarian’s blog.  Here’s her synopsis and comments.  You’ll see why I have to read this one:

In a future America where rising seas have claimed much of the land, leaving Topsiders to pack themselves in tiny stacked apartments, some people have taken to the ocean. These pioneers live on the ocean floor, farming the sea and sending crops to the government in exchange for their homesteads. This is where Ty Townsend has lived all his life. He was the first child to be born in the undersea community of Benthic Territory and he loves it there. But when outlaws threaten the safety of the settlers, Ty must do what he can to save the only home he’s ever known. And when a Topsider girl appears, searching for her prospector brother, she’ll join him on his quest and together they’ll find that there are secrets being kept about the Dark Life.

This one’s going to be big, folks. The action is non-stop and it’s set in a really well-developed future world. I wouldn’t hesitate to hand it to fans of City of Ember and The Hunger Games. (Yes, I just compared it to The Hunger Games. That shows you how much I loved it.)

Understand now why I can’t wait to read this one!? Dark Life is due out in May.  I already have it preordered!

    • Grab your current read
    • Open to a random page
    • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
    • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
    • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week comes from Face of a Killer by Robin Burcell:

“A seed of doubt planted because of a few minute, trivial details that did not appear in any police reports.  Details that only someone close to her family would recognize.”

What is your teaser this week?

    Review: Intertwined, by Gena Showalter

    47755452

    • Reading level: Young Adult
    • Hardcover: 448 pages
    • Publisher: Harlequin (September 1, 2009)
    • Source: Publisher

Aden Stone isn’t your typical sixteen-year-old.  He’s not spending his time playing games on his Xbox 360.  He’s dealing with the four souls that share his body.  One is time traveler, one can see the future, one can raise the dead, and the final can possess the body of another human.  Aden speaks to each of the souls and this has forced Aden to move from foster home to foster home, from one psychiatric home to another.  The voices in his head never seem to quiet that is, until he meets Mary Ann.  Her presence alone brings him the peace and serenity he has craved for all his life.  While Aden seems to attract the supernatural, Mary Ann suppresses it. This peace doesn’t last long, for Aden & Mary Ann aren’t the only supernatural beings in town.  Aden’s supernatural “magnetism” has drawn all sorts of creatures in to town, including vampires, shape shifters, faeries. Aden & Mary Ann join forces with a shape shifter and a vampire princess to face the impending doom .

Overall, Intertwined was an engaging read. However, I do think it would be better served if it were split into two separate books.  There seemed to be so much going on at one time and got confusing in parts.  I think the character development was sacrificed in order to tie everything up into one book.  I would have liked to have learned more about the souls residing in Aiden’s mind.  I did note that a sequel, UNRAVELED, is scheduled for release in the fall of this year and I’m hoping we learn a bit more about Aden and his souls.

Waiting on Wednesday: Faithful Place by Tana French

    faithfulplace

Words cannot describe how excited I was when I learned from Trish that Tana French is releasing another book.  I’m a huge fan of French’s writing; I totally engulfed The Likeness  and In the Woods when I read them.  They completely took over my life; I wanted to devote all my time to reading them.

Here’s a summary of Faithful Place from Amazon:

The course of Frank Mackey’s life was set by one defining moment when he was nineteen. The moment his girlfriend, Rosie Daly, failed to turn up for their rendezvous in Faithful Place, failed to run away with him to London as they had planned. Frank never heard from her again. Twenty years on, Frank is still in Dublin, working as an undercover cop. He’s cut all ties with his dysfunctional family. Until his sister calls to say that Rosie’s suitcase has been found. Frank embarks on a journey into his past that demands he reevaluate everything he believes to be true.

Sounds great, doesn’t it!?  Faithful Place is scheduled to be published on July 13, 2010.
