Thankfully Reading Weekend: Day Three

You’ve made it! It’s day three of the Thankfully Reading Weekend!  I hope you’ve enjoyed the event!

Before we get on to today’s mini-challenge, don’t forget to visit the other two challenges that took place this weekend. There’s still time to take part in them:

Mini Challenge #1: What book are you most thankful for?

Mini Challenge #2: Photograph Your TBR!

Today’s Mini-Challenge is hosted by Jen from Devourer of Books:

So what I want to know, is what reading community are you thankful for, and why? Are you thankful for book bloggers? The book community on Twitter? Your spouse or family that lets you ramble on and on about what you’re reading and doesn’t complain (at least not too much) about the myriad of books flowing into the house?

So be sure to stop by Jen’s blog today to complete this mini-challenge.

Later today I’ll be posting the wrap-up post.  Feel free to continue reading as long as you like; there is no “end time” to this event.

Have fun & I hope you have another wonderful reading day!

Thankfully Reading Weekend Mini-Challege #2: Photograph Your TBR Shelves

Today, Candace from Beth Fish Reads hosts the second challenge of Thankfully Reading Weekend:

Today’s mini-challenge is to share a photograph of your TBR pile or at least one bookshelf. I know some of you already posted some photos of the books you hope to read this weekend, but I’d like to see more books. You can show older books, your kids’ books, or new books. You can show a boring old bookcase (like I did) or you can photograph something fun. If you want, feel free to vlog. Either way, Show Me the Books!

I attempted to do a vlog of my bookshelves.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you are!) my husband is currently watching college football. He was doing a bit of yelling in the background, not using the most appropriate of words!  So instead, I share with you photographs of the majority of my bookshelves!

The first is my horror bookshelf.  My husband isn’t very happy that it’s set up in our living room, but now at least it’s behind the chaise part of our couch and not as obvious as it used to be!

The next is my mix-mash shelf, also in our living room.  It started off as a bookshelf to hold my leather-bound classics & some of my favorite books as a child (including the Little House on the Prairie series!).  Then I added my YA books and my “vampire books” (Anne Rice, Sookie Stackhouse, Vampire Diaries” were also added.  So, it doesn’t make much sense anymore.

Finally, we have the largest shelf I own, one we purchased from Ikea over the summer.  Another mix-mash of books. The top two rows of shelves have some of my favorite crime fiction, fiction, & YA books.  The bottom two contain ARCs and other upcoming books on my TBR shelves.

Oh, I’d be remiss not to add a picture of Jack, one of my reading buddies.  Now that I have a chaise to sit in while reading, he lays at the bottom of my feet and sleeps while I read.

So there you have it! Not nearly as exciting as a vlog but fun nonetheless!

Thankfully Reading Weekend: Day Two!

Day two of Thankfully Reading Weekend is here! How did everyone fare yesterday?  I admit; I didn’t get nearly as much reading done as I would have liked.  My boys were home with me while my husband worked.  Eventually, we had to brave the crowds just so I could get them out of the house!

Today presents the same problem.  We’re off to get our Christmas pictures taken.  I’ll have my book in tow, but I really don’t feel like dealing with the mall crowd today!

Check back later today for more information on today’s mini-challenge.  Keep reading, keep relaxing.  Hopefully I’ll be joining you this afternoon!

Edited: Day Two’s Mini-Challenge is now up at Beth Fish Reads. All you have to do is post a picture of your TBR or of one of your bookshelves. Easy peasy!

Thankfully Reading Weekend 2010: The Kickoff!

It’s time!!  Rather than facing the crowds & going shopping on this Black Friday, what are we doing? READING!!

This is the official kick off post for Thankfully Reading 2010.  Feel free to link up your kick-off post to the Mr. Linky below, as well as any update posts you have.

If you don’t know what to post, here are some ideas. But remember there are no rules; you do not need to post during the weekend!

  • How did you celebrate Thanksgiving?
  • What’s in your TBR pile for the weekend?
  • How much time do you think you’ll have for reading?
  • What book are you starting out with?
  • Are you reading print, ebooks, or audio? Maybe a bit each?
  • What books did you discuss at Thanksgiving? Did you get any recommendations you can share?
  • If you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, don’t worry, this is a weekend for everyone throughout the world.

Pictures are a great thing to add to your kick-off posts!  Here are a few pictures of my Thankfully Reading Weekend Plans:

My reading spot

The stack of books I plan to read

Throughout the weekend, feel free to post about your progress or even get some reviews up. Be sure to come back and link up your posts. Then take a break and check out everyone else’s posts. We’re looking forward to seeing how everyone else is celebrating Thankfully Reading Weekend.

Oh and don’t forget that some of your fellow readers will be on Twitter. You can search for Thankfully Reading Weekend tweets and hook up with others by using the hashtag #thankfulreading.

On Sunday afternoon, we’ll post another Mr. Linky for your wrap-up post. Tell us how your Thankfully Reading Weekend went. You could give mini-reviews of your books, tell us how many books and which books you read, number of pages, number of hours, and so on. This is a rule-free, contest-free event, so you can wrap up the weekend however you’d like.

Check back later today for information about the mini-challenges taking place over the course of the weekend!

With that said, let’s get reading!!

Happy Thanksgiving 2010!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US readers!  My husband, boys & I are spending a quiet Thanksgiving at home today.  We’ve had a busy few weeks with the flu, new furniture being delivered, etc.

So…we decided to order a fully-cooked Thanksgiving dinner to help make our holiday a restful one.  Buyer beware: you get what you pay for.

I’m not going to stress out about it too much.  Thanksgiving is about being thankful for what we have.  We’ve been lucky to have a pretty wonderful year and I’m very happy for that!

I’m also very happy with the participation for Thankfully Reading Weekend!  There’s still time to sign up if you are interested!  The official kick-off post, with Mr. Linky, will go up tomorrow.

Until then, Happy Thanksgiving!

Louisa May Alcott Giveaway!

This is the time of year to be thankful.  One of the books that has forever touched my heart is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  It is one of the few books I have read several times (last count-8 times).  I loved it so much that I read the other books Little Men and Jo’s Boys and cherished them as well.

I was excited when I was given the opportunity to give away this fantastic giveaway package, which includes a copy of Harriet Reisen’s book, Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women and a copy of the American Master’s DVD of the same title.

This package would be the perfect holiday gift for any fan of Little Women (I want one myself!).  Be sure to check out the author’s Facebook page which has great links to reading guides, a photo gallery,  a video, etc.  All of this is accessible even to non-Facebook members, because the page shows up without logging in.

To enter, please fill out the form below.  Open to US & Canadian residents only. The winner will be announced on Friday, December 3rd.  Good luck!

Review: Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning

  • Mass Market Paperback: 512 pages
  • Publisher: Dell; Reissue edition (October 26, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 0440244404
  • Source: Publisher
  • *The following review contains spoilers. If you have not read the previous four books in the MacKayla Lane series please do not proceed*

At the end of Faefever, book three in the MacKayla Lane series, the walls separating the Fae and the human world have come crashing down.  Mac has been captured by the Fae Lord Master, turned into a Pri-ya,  a Fae sex-addict.  Her body & soul are being ravaged by the unseelie princes.

“When I was in high school, I used to hate that Sylvia Plath poem where she talked about knowing the bottom, that she knew it with her great taproot and that it was what everybody else feared, but she didn’t, because she’d been there.  I still hate it.  But I get it now.”

Dani, the thirteen year old sidhe-seer who has formed a bond with Mac, breaks into the cell holding Mac & attempts to rescue her.  She is stopped by none other than Jericho Barrons, who pulls Mac from the throws of torture.

Over the next several weeks, Jericho uses unconventional methods to cure Mac of her condition and Mac is revivied, stronger than ever.  She learns a bit more about her mysterious childhood, making her wonder if she is the cause to all the turmoil the world is currently facing. Is this her destiny? Was her sister meant to be killed so young?  While Mac continues the hunt for the elusive Sinsar Dubh, she continues to seek out answers to her many questions about origins.

I have to say, I think Dreamfever is my favorite of this series.  The issues I had with Mac’s naivety & overall immaturity are long gone. The Mac in this book is strong, kicking butt & taking names.  While this book ends without answering many questions (and adding a whole list of new questions to the bunch) the fact that this series continues to hold my attention is a testament to Moning’s skill as an author.

Dreamfever is very different than the previous books in the series. It’s darker, sexier, and quite addictive!  I cannot bear to wait for the release of Shadowfever, the fifth and final book in this series.  The MacKayla Lane series is a drug…and I’m hooked!

Note: this book contains a great deal of violence & sex.  None of it is gratuitous, all necessary to portray the story.

The end of Dreamfever is packed with additional resources, including a glossary from Mac’s journal, recipes from Dublin, deleted scenes, & an interview between Karen Marie Moning & Jericho Barrons!

Thank you once again to TLC Book Tours for getting me hooked on this series & providing me with the opportunity to participate in this tour!
