Guest Post: Julie Hyzy, Author of the White House Chef Mystery Series

To say that I’m tickled to guest blog here today would be an understatement. When I saw Jenn’s Tweet about reviewing all the White House Chef Mysteries on her blog this week, I thanked her and she invited me to visit.

First off – thank you, Jenn, for reading and reviewing Ollie’s adventures. I have so much fun writing for executive chef, Ollie, and the gang at the White House. In the book that just came out, Buffalo West Wing, Ollie is dealing with a change in administration. As you may know, she got along famously with the First Lady in books 1, 2, and 3. This time, however, a new First Family has come to live at 1600 Pennsylvania, and Ollie is desperate to win them over. But that’s kinda hard to do when she keeps getting into trouble…

One of my favorite things about reading is being immersed in the world the author has created for me to enjoy. And when I’m writing I lose myself just as easily. Whether it’s Ollie’s, or Grace’s (Manor House Mysteries) adventure, I often feel as though I’m not actually writing, as much as I am channeling the characters’ stories that play out in my head. Love it.

Being immersed in Ollie’s world has had an enormous impact on my personal life. Since beginning the White House Chef Mysteries, I’ve gotten far more interested in cooking than I ever had been. I watch Top Chef, Iron Chef, Ace of Cakes, and Throwdown with Bobby Flay among many others. No one here at home saw this new fascination coming, but I’m delighted that it did. I do a great deal of research to get my White House details just right and even though I don’t come up with the recipes in the book myself, I’m eager to get my food details just right, too. I’m very fortunate to have a “ghost chef,” who is an absolute delight to work with.

Several of my author friends (Avery Aames, Sheila Connolly, Cleo Coyle, Krista Davis, Mary Jane Maffini, Elizabeth Spann Craig, Wendy Lyn Watson) and I are members of MysteryLoversKitchen.com, where we blog every day – sharing recipes, book news, funny stories and more. If you haven’t stopped by, please do. It’s a welcoming community and we’d love to have you in our kitchen. Oh, and we have contests, of course. In fact, I’ll be announcing a new one today!

Thank you, Jenn, for allowing me to say hello to your readers. This is a wonderful blog. The best books I’ve ever read have been those recommended to me by people I trust. Thank you for being such a great friend to readers everywhere!

Best always,
Julie

Thank you so much Julie for stopping by!

Review: Buffalo West Wing by Julie Hyzy

  • Paperback: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Berkley; Original edition (January 4, 2011)
  • ISBN-10: 0425239233

  • A new administration is entering the White House.  White House Executive Chef Ollie Paras & her staff are struggling with the change.  It’s not out of the ordinary for White House staff to be replaced when a new administration comes in.

Inauguration Day is a hectic day at the White House, for obvious reasons.  When a box of take-out chicken shows up in the White House kitchen, with the names of the First children listed on the box, Ollie follows Secret Service protocol and refuses to deliver the chicken to the First Family, for good reason it turns out. This causes an uproar with the First Lady who is unaccustomed to the strict safety rules enforced by the Secret Service.  This isn’t exactly put Ollie in a good light, in the First Lady’s eyes.

As if things can’t get worse, Ollie learns that the First Family intends on bringing their personal chef into the White House, causing more drama and stress on Ollie & her staff.

Simultaneously, drama unfolds at a local hospital when Armustonian extremists take the hospital, and several White House staff, captive. It’s obvious that someone is after the new First Family.  An agent that played a big role at the White House in the past has returned to head up the investigation.

Can Ollie, and her career, survive this change in administration?

Buffalo West Wing is the fourth book in the White House Chef Mystery series and without a doubt is my favorite.  The new First Family mirrors the Obama family, down to the grandmother living at the White House to help with the children & the creation of a new White House garden.  Not knowing much more about the family, I hope the not so pleasant things Ollie experiences with them is pure fiction!

Another reason I enjoyed this book is it really showcases how much Ollie’s grown & evolved since becoming the Executive Chef. Not that she was ever weak, in Buffalo West Wing the reader really gets to see the strong & tough side of Ollie.

I can’t forget to mention the lovely recipes printed in the back of the book, including one for buffalo wing sauce that I plan on trying out this weekend!

Upon finishing this book, I quite literally regretted turning the last page.  The characters were so real that I feel as though I’m saying goodbye to friends who are moving away.  I’m hoping there are many more books to be released in this series, as Hyzy has won me over with her writing. I’m still kicking myself for not starting this series sooner, but now I hope to be able to relive the characters in subsequent books she publishes.

Stay tuned for a special guest post from the author Julie Hyzy later today.

Ollie Paras, Executive Chef for the White House, is busy planning for the Easter events hosted by the White House, including the famous Easter egg roll.  Instead, she & her staff have been banned from the White House kitchen after a guest at the state dinner dies, presumably due to something he ate.  Ollie is desperate to stand up for her staff, but Secret Service Special Agent Tom MacKenzie is tasked to keep Ollie out of the kitchen & away from the investigation.  The fact Tom is also Ollie’s boyfriend certainly puts a kink in things, including their relationship.

While Ollie is banned from the kitchen, she enjoys some quality time with her mother & grandmother, who have come to DC to see Ollie in action for the first time.  Their presence certainly makes things interesting, especially when Ollie’s mother begins dating a friend of the deceased state dinner guest.  All of this is just too much for Ollie. She’s out of her element, desperate to get back into the kitchen and back to her “normal” life.

It was interesting to see Ollie outside of her comfort zone in a completely new setting.  I enjoyed her interactions with her mother & grandmother, a more personal side than the previous two books. As in the other books, Hyzy continues with her engaging characters & compelling storyline.  Now that I’m nearing the end of the series (at least the books already published!) I’m already mourning the loss of the characters who have genuinely become a part of my life.

Review: Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson

  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Random House Trade Paperbacks; Reprint edition (November 30, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 0812981227
  • Source: Publisher
  •

Major Ernest Pettigrew is mourning the recent passing of his brother, Bertie.  This pain is exacerbated due to a battle Major is having with Bertie’s widow over a Churchill shotgun, one of a pair presented to both brothers when their father passed.  The intent was for both guns to be reunited as a pair, but Bertie’s widow plans to sell it to generate some income.  Major’s further hurt when his son, Roger, agrees with the plan to sell the gun.  Roger’s not much for tradition, or anything involving family, and would much rather have the money so he and his girlfriend can buy a weekend cottage.

Major’s pain is lessened when he forms a close relationship with Mrs. Ali, a widow herself.  Mrs. Ali & her husband owned a local grocery shop together; now she is forced to run the shop herself, with the help of her nephew visiting from Pakistan.  Major & Mrs. Ali’s relationship soon blossoms into something more due to their joint love of books and the recent loss of their spouses.

The small village isn’t exactly welcoming of this relationship. Despite Major’s prominence in the community & Mrs. Ali’s generosity to the townspeople, the town continues to regard Mrs. Ali as a foreigner.  Can their newly-budding relationship survive?

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand is a quintessential, old-fashioned love story, but also so much more.  These two characters are so deserving of one another, of happiness.  Simonson touches on some pretty heavy social issues including the struggle between culture & religion, but doesn’t do it in a way that weighs down the storyline.  Her writing is simply breathtaking; the words, so descriptive & fluid, seem to literally flow across the page like a beautiful piece of music.  Major & Mrs. Ali’s relationship proves that there is no such thing as too late for love and I couldn’t help assume a role as cheerleader for their evolving relationship.  While both loved their spouses, they seem to be meant for one another…at this time, at this place.

It’s not often that I keep a book after reading it, but this book has earned a place on my treasured books shelf. Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand is a modern classic, destined to win the hearts of many readers!

Review: Hail to the Chef by Julie Hyzy

  • Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Berkley (December 2, 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 0425224996
  • Source: Personal Copy
  • In the second book in the White House Chef Mystery series, Ollie Paras is settling in her new role as Executive Chef to the White House.  It’s Christmas time in DC and the entire White House is preparing for the holidays.  As expected, things are never calm at the White House.

Ollie is meeting with First Lady Mrs. Campbell and her nephew and personal advisor, Sean, when an incendiary device is found on the property.  Ollie is forced into the bunker with the First Lady & Sean. Ollie can’t help but overhear a discussion between the First Lady & her nephew about a company of which her family is part owner. The other parties are interested in selling and changing the scope of the company but the First Lady isn’t interested.  The conversation soon turns to Ollie…and Sean.  Mrs. Campbell doesn’t hide her intentions on setting the two up.   The trio are eventually released from the bunker & Ollie carries on preparing for the holidays.

The bomb scare beefs up the already tight security at the White House, and now all staff are forced to attend security training.  The kitchen crew isn’t happy about this at all; this season is the busiest time of year.  Reluctantly they attend, eventually realizing how valuable this training is.

It’s impossible for Ollie not to get caught up in some sort of action at the White House.  When a White House electrician is electrocuted and is killed, Ollie must find out the real cause.   The extra electricians assigned to the White House over the holidays seem less than interested in discussing what happened with Ollie, so she’s forced to do some investigating on her own.

Hail to the Chef is quite the accurate title for this book as Ollie continues to risk her life (and her job!) to protect the White House. The extremely dynamic characters and heart-pounding storyline continues in the second book in this addictive series.

This may be my favorite book of the series, partially because it is set during the holiday season.  In addition to the thrilling dual storylines, I loved reading about the White House’s preparation for the holidays.  As in the first book, Hyzy clearly as done a great deal of research on the subject as many of the traditions she described really do take place.  A gingerbread rendering of the White House (seen on the cover of the book) is my favorite tradition. You can see more about how the White House decorates for Christmas here.

While you don’t have to read the first book, State of the Onion (my review), to enjoy Hail to the Chef, I recommend you do so you get an accurate history of the characters.

Come back tomorrow for more in the White House Chef Mystery Series week here on the blog! I’ll review the third book, Eggsecutive Orders.

Review: State of the Onion by Julie Hyzy

  • Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Berkley; White House Chef Mystery Series #1. edition (January 2, 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 0425218694
  • Source: Personal Copy
  • Olivia “Ollie” Paras is the White House Assistant Chef.  Her mentor, Henry, is retiring and Ollie is in the running for his spot.  Also in the running is TV celebrity chef Laurel Anne Braun, an obnoxious and condescending woman.  Ollie & Laurel have a past, one that Laurel won’t let Ollie forget. As if Ollie doesn’t have enough to worry about, she literally runs into an intrude on the front lawn of the White House.  While she tries to stay out of the way of the Secret Service Agents chasing the masked man,  when Ollie sees he’s getting away she knocks him out with a frying pan she’s planning on giving Henry as a retirement gift.

The Secret Service is less than impressed with her interference, specifically Secret Service Agent Thomas MacKenzie, Ollie’s boyfriend.

The stress and tension increase when the President becomes involved in a peace treaty agreement in the Middle East.  The Chameleon, an extremely dangerous assasin, is out to put a stop to this agreement. Ollie’s involvement puts her life in danger as well. Will she survive long enough to be granted the position as White House Executive Chef?

I’ve kicked myself for not reading this series sooner!  As a resident of the DC area, I really loved that this series is based in my “hometown.” The White House kitchen setting was fresh and unique.  The additional details about the White House & the inner workings really added to the story.  The author had the opportunity to interview a former Executive Chef to the White House, so the information revealed is true to life.

Additionally, one can’t help but fall in love with the characters, even the irritating ones.  As if this isn’t enough, the mystery behind the intruder & the subsequent actions really pull you in.  Food lovers will love the 20+ pages of recipes at the end of the book!

Stay tuned for reviews of the rest of the books in this series, including HAIL TO THE CHEF, EGGSECUTIVE ORDERS & BUFFALO WEST WING, scheduled to post later this week!

Wrapping up 2010! Happy New Year

You won’t see any 2010 “favorite book lists” here on the blog. Instead, I’m looking forward to reading some great books in 2011!

This weekend I’m curling up with a great mystery series, The White House Chef Mysteries by Julie Hyzy.  I’ve owned this series for a while and when I was pitched the newest book, Buffalo West Wing, for review, I had the perfect excuse to pick up this series & read it.

This leads me to my blogging goal for 2011:

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more Specifically, reading books I already own or books I genuinely want to read.  So many times I read posts or tweets by other bloggers stating that blogging seems like a chore to them because they are reading books pitched to them rather than what they really wanted to read. The fix is easy! Stop reading what others want you to read and read what you want!   You own your blog! You get to decide what you read & review.  I was able to do this this last year and let me say, it is quite liberating!

So, looking forward to 2011, following are some books I have lined up to read for review in the next month!

    The Sentry by Robert Crais
The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta
    Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning
    Lucifer’s Tears by James Thompson

What books are you looking forward to reading in 2011?

    Merry Christmas 2010!

It’s been a relatively calm Christmas Eve in our house, comparatively! I wanted to do a quick post to thank you all for a wonderful year!

One of my husband’s coworkers gave him this gorgeous Lego ornament for Christmas. I simply had to share it with you all, as well as instructions on how to make it.

Isn’t is gorgeous? Anyway, here are the directions on assembling, including the Lego pieces you’ll need to complete the ornament. Obviously, not enough time to do it for this Christmas, but plenty of time for next year!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas!!

Review: Where Teddy Bears Come From by Mark Burgess

    • Reading level: Ages 4-8
    • Hardcover: 32 pages
    • Publisher: Peachtree Publishers (August 1, 2009)
    • ISBN-10: 1561454877
    • Source: Publisher

There was once a little wolf who couldn’t fall asleep. Mother Wolf tried everything: a glass of milk, snuggling, even reading little wolf his favorite teddy bear story three times in a row.  Nothing worked.  The little wolf was wide awake.

As the morning light shone on his story book, little wolf discovered what would help him sleep: a teddy bear!  He asks his mother where teddy bears came from.  She wasn’t certain and suggested he ask Wise Owl.  Wise Owl didn’t know either, & suggested he ask the Three Little Pigs.

Soon the little wolf is on an adventure asking various characters from fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks.  Along the way, he literally runs into a rosy-faced old man driving a big red truck. The truck’s tire is out of air, so the little wolf helps by huffing and puffing into the tire. The old man stops the little wolf with a “Ho, Ho, Ho!”

The cheery old man tells the little wolf that if he runs home, he’ll find the answer to his question in the morning.  The little wolf falls asleep as soon as he gets home, sleeping through the night.  He awakens to find a present at the food of the bed. Inside? A soft, cuddly teddy bear!

WHERE TEDDY BEARS COME FROM is an adorable tale perfect for not only the holiday season, but any time of year.  My five year old enjoyed the appearances of some of his favorite fairy tale characters.  And teddy bears? Who can resist teddy bears?

The illustrations, by Russell Ayto, are quirky and cute and really add a bit of spunk to the story!  This book would make a great addition to any picture book collection!

Thanks to the publisher, I have one copy of Where Teddy Bears Come From to give away.  To enter, please fill out the form below.  US & Canadian residents only, please.  The winner will be announced Friday, December 31st!  Good luck to all who enter!
