A Belated BBAW Interview with Such A Book Nerd

Yesterday’s book blogger interview swaps were so popular, the BBAW committee was contacted yesterday by a few individuals who still wanted to participate.  I agreed to help out  and so today I present you with an interview with Jamie from Such a Book Nerd (don’t you love that  name!?)

Here’s some info about Jamie:

I live in Chicago and read way too much.

Books are my favorite hobby, and I’m here to write about them, things pertaining to them, people who write them, and other things I think might be of interest to fellow bibliophiles.

And on to the interview!  To make things easier, my questions are in bold, Jamie’s answer are italicized.

When did you start blogging & why?
I started blogging while in college, largely because it seemed like a fun way to make a sort of  living diary.  It’s been years since then, and I’ve continued blogging about my life, but only recently have I turned my focus purely to book blogging, which has already been really rewarding and fun.

Has your reading style changed since you started blogging?
Blogging about books has definitely made me read more critically.  Also, it’s made me pre-plan what I’m reading, which isn’t something I typically do. I’m definitely a “Walk into Borders and grab what looks interesting” kind of reader, but now there’s a little advance planning involved. (Like with the upcoming Banned Books Week, I really want to read something from the most-challenged list.)

What’s a genre you typically don’t read and why?
I don’t read a lot of crime novels, and really – I’m not sure why.  When I do read them, I’m always riveted, but I guess by nature I tend to flock more to classics and non-fiction books.  (I’m open to suggestions, though!)

Name a book that you loved, but felt didn’t get the publicity it deserved.
There’s a really wonderful book about Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, and Lord Byron called “The Monsters.”  Granted, it’s about a small circle of literary people, so the niche can’t be that huge, but I think it’s so wonderful and no one’s ever heard of it.  Heck, I got my copy at a used book store for probably four bucks.

On the other side, is there a book you feel didn’t deserve the publicity it received?
While I understand it’s importance and Kerouac’s influence, I just don’t get all the hype around “On the Road.”  I read it, and understood that it’s well-written and must have seemed groundbreaking, but maybe I’m just of the wrong generation…who knows?

Looking at your blog, I see that you attend a fair amount of author events.  Which was your favorite and why?
Recently, Alison Arngrim from “Little House on the Prairie” came to speak at a Borders in Chicago, and  I attended. She was really funny, and I loved her book.  There wasn’t any sugar-coating when she talked. She’s blatant and hysterical and it’s great.

Do you read ebooks? If no, why?
I don’t yet – I love ink and paper. However, I’m probably going to wind up with a Kindle soon.  Purely because we’re running out of bookcase room in our apartment.

Care to share something that no one else knows about you?
I’ve never finished “Anna Karenina.” Sssh! Tell no one.

What are some of the books you are looking forward to?
Hands down, the book I’m most looking forward to is Sarah Vowell’s new book, “Unfamliar Fishes.”  It’s about the conquest/settlement of Hawaii as a U.S. State.  A) I love Vowell, and B) I just returned from Hawaii and have learned a lot about the mixed feelings that are still lingering over there about the whole being a state vs being a sovereign nation thing.

There you have it!  Be sure to check out Such a Book Nerd later today to see my answers to her interview questions!

Waiting on Wednesday: Worth Dying For by Lee Child

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

The book I am eagerly anticipating is Lee Child’s Worth Dying For.  I literally just finished listening to the audio of the previous book, 61 Hours and I need me some more Reacher!  Worth Dying For is the 15th book in the Reacher series.

Here is a summary from the publisher:

#1 New York Times-bestselling author Lee Child follows the electrifying 61 Hours with his latest Reacher thriller — a story that hits the ground running and then accelerates all the way to a colossal showdown.

There’s deadly trouble in the corn country of Nebraska…and Jack Reacher walks right into it. First he falls foul of the Duncans, a local clan that has terrified an entire county into submission. But it’s the unsolved case of a missing child, already decades-old, that Reacher can’t let go.

The Duncans want Reacher gone — and it’s not just past secrets they’re trying to hide. They’re awaiting a secret shipment that’s already late — and they have the kind of customers no one can afford to annoy. For, as dangerous as the Duncans are, they’re just the bottom of a criminal food chain stretching halfway around the world.

For Reacher, it would have made much more sense to keep on going, to put some distance between himself and the hard-core trouble that’s bearing down on him.

For Reacher, that was also impossible.

Worth Dying For is the kind of explosive thriller only Lee Child could write and only Jack Reacher could survive — a heart-racing page-turner no suspense fan will want to miss.

I’m in luck, Worth Dying For is scheduled for release on October 19th by Delacorte Press, so I only have around a month to wait!

What book are you waiting for?

Teaser Tuesday: The Fall by Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week comes from:

“He detected tracees of humanity in their faces, but it was only that: traces.  Like the glimmer of greedy humanoid intelligence one sees inside the eyes of a hungry dog.” (ARC, pg. 101)

What is your teaser this week?

BBAW Day Two: Interview Swap With JP From YA Urban

Today is day two of BBAW (Book Blogger Appreciation Week) and today we’re participating in an interview swap with another book blogger.

My swap partner is JP from YA, Urban, a YA book blog.  Here’s a bit of information about JP:

“I am an aspiring YA urban fantasy writer and I blog about books, authors, lit events and other YA lit things that I love. My WIP is Team Demon. @jpmsull on Twitter.”

Following are JP’s answers to my interview questions:

Jenn: What were some of your favorite books growing up?

JP: Some of my favorite books growing up were actually Chris D’Lacey’s clay dragon novels. They’re really good, and really creative.

Jenn: Have you always been a book lover?

JP: Yes, I pretty much have always been the one guy who’s obsessed with books and writing. The minute I picked up my first chapter book, I was hooked.

Jenn: When did you start blogging & why?

JP: I started blogging May of 2010. Why? Well, I wanted to write reviews of books on my own site, but used to be afraid no one would read them. I did some online research and proved that theory wrong!

Jenn: What is your most memorable (exciting or embarrassing) author moments?

JP: Well…I guess this one time when I wrote a short story that was being read out loud, and the boy & girl MC’s liked each other, and the girl MC was named after the girl I liked in that class….

Jenn: What are some books you are looking forward to?

JP:  Wow. I love this question. Um, okay: ANGELFIRE by Courtney Allison Moulton; WILDEFIRE by Karsten Knight; FOREVER by Maggie Stiefvater; PERSONAL DEMONS by Lisa D. (I don’t know how to spell her last name, hehe); and CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS by Cassandra Clare.

Thank you, JP, for participating in this interview swap with me! I’ve discovered yet another fantastic YA book blog! Everyone, be sure to check out YA Urban today!

Kicking Off Book Blogger Appreciation Week!

It’s here! It’s here! The week we’ve all been waiting for, Book Blogger Appreciation Week!  This will be my second year officially participating in BBAW, a week in which we all celebrate book blogs.

The amazing folks on the BBAW Committee have come up with daily topics to post about. Today’s topic: first treasures!  What’s a great new book blog you’ve discovered since last year’s BBAW?

I obviously can’t write about just one blog, so I’ve chosen five blogs I’ve discovered in the past year. I discovered most of these blogs on Twitter (if you haven’t signed up yet, you really must!) So, without further ado:

Michelle @ My Books, My Life: I got to meet Michelle at BEA this year.  While she & I don’t see eye to eye on sports, she has an great sense of humor and has a pretty excellent blog! She’s also very active on Twitter.

Kelly from Kelly Vision. Kelly is another local blogger who reads a tremendous amount of books!  She’s a fan of horror movies (yay!) and Stephen King, my idol.  She also has an adorable dog named Sam.

Megan @ Po(sey) Sessions: I recently discovered something we both have in common: the love of zombie fiction! Anyone who loves zombie fiction is A+ in my book!

Michelle @ That’s What She Read (formerly Michelle’s Masterful Musings): Michelle is also a full-time working mom of two, so I feel we have a lot in common. She also likes to read about vampires (including THAT book series with vampires that sparkle, but I don’t hold it against her!), so again, she’s A+ in my book!

Amanda @ A Patchwork of Books.  Amanda is a DC area blogger who blogs about children’s books & YA.  We only live about half an hour away from one another but haven’t yet had the chance to meet yet.  Amanda works at my FAVORITE indie children’s bookstore, Hooray For Books.  Yes, I’m extremely jealous.

Ok, I literally could go on and on, but I’ll stop here! Be sure to share your first treasures over on the BBAW blog!

R.I.P. V Challenge!

Ok, you all know by now that fall is my favorite time of year. Cooler weather, pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween, and Carl’s R.I.P. Challenge!

What is the R.I.P. Challenge, you may ask? Here’s a brief description, taken from Carl’s blog, Stainless Steel Droppings:

“It is time to celebrate things that go bump in the night; that favorite detective that always gets his man, or woman, in the end; that delicious chill of a creak on the stairs, of the rogue waiting in the dark, of the full moon and the flit of bats wings.”

To complete this challenge, you can read books, short stories, or *new* watch movies from the following genre:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

I have it easy this year. Since I’m also hosting/planning Fright Fest, this challenge will be a breeze. Therefore, I’m signing up for two parts of this challenge:

I plan to watch several horror/thriller movies in the next few months.  Muhhhwwaaahaaa! I also just purchased Supernatural Season 5 on DVD…that counts, right?

In addition, I am also signing up for:

I will read at least 4 (likely more like 15-20) books in the horror/thriller/supernatural genres.

Here are just a few of the books I have lined up to read:

The Fall: Book Two of the Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan
Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist
The Bell Witch by Brent Monahan

I’m still working on my lists but I plan on using this post to keep track of them.  Anything I should have on my list?

Review: Guardians of Ga’hoole: The Capture by Kathryn Lasky

  • Reading level: Ages 9-12
  • Paperback: 240 pages
  • Publisher: Scholastic Paperbacks (August 1, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 0545253063
  • Source: Big Honcho Media
  • Soren is a young barn owl who lives with his family in the kingdom of Tyto experiencing the typical barn owl life.  He learns about the legends of mighty owls called the Guardians of Ga’Hoole through stories his parents tell him and his siblings.

Soren falls (so he thinks) from his nest and is snatched up by chick-snatching owls and taken to St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls.  He is told that his parents are dead, thereby making him an orphan.  He befriends a young owl named  Gylfie, and the two discover that the Academy is brainwashing the young owls, forcing them to forget their names, their entire past.  Soren & Gylfie are forced to come up with a means to escape St. Aegolius. One of the many things preventing them from escaping is their ability to fly.  This skill is typically taught to a young owl by his/her parents, but these two young owls must learn on their own. During their journey home, they discover the owl world is in horrible danger and they must rush to do what they can to protect it.

My oldest son, John, and I read this book together. We both found it quite engaging.  John was interested in it because he learned a great deal about owls and their behavior (and their droppings!) We also learned a great deal about owl culture, and Lasky used it to detail social structure. While this is clearly a fiction book, some of the text “feels” nonfiction, which I feel increased my son’s interest in reading it.

THE CAPTURE It is a perfect book for reluctant reader because it is so engaging, fast-paced and full of action.  The length is perfect for a young reader as well, just under 230 pages. This book is geared toward 9-12 year old children. I agree, however the younger part of that age range may need assistance with pronunciation of some of the words. John is turning 11 and had a small difficulty with some of the complex terms used.

John & I definitely plan on continuing with this series! Now that we’ve read THE CAPTURE we plan on rushing out to see the movie when it hits the theaters on September 24th.

Be sure to come back later this afternoon! Two lucky winners will receive:

    • A copy of Guardians of Ga’hoole: The Capture by Kathryn Lasky
    • A copy the first book in Kathryn Lasky’s new series — Wolves of the Beyond: Lone Wolf

    About the Author:
Kathryn Lasky is the Newbery Honor author of over one hundred fiction and nonfiction books for children and young adults. She lives with her husband in Cambridge, Massachusetts. You can visit her online at www.kathrynlasky.com

Be sure to check out the official web site for the book series (http://www.scholastic.com/gahoole) and learn some more owl facts, download some owl printables, and play some great games!
