Review & Giveway: One Deadly Sin by Annie Solomon

Author Bio:

A native New Yorker, RITA-winning author Annie Solomon has been dreaming up stories since she was ten. After a twelve-year career in advertising, where she rose to Vice President and Head Writer at a mid-size agency, she abandoned the air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps of her professional life for her first love—romance. An avid knitter, she now lives in Nashville with her husband and daughter.

My Review:

Edie Swan has returned to her small hometown of Redbud, dead set on revenge. When she was a child, her father committed suicide after being involved in scandal and soon after her mother had a breakdown. Her possessions consist of her motorcycle, a few pieces of clothing, and a list of names. The individuals on the list were the last people her father spoke to before killing himself. She wants to scare these men into turning themselves in, admitting their deceipt. So, she sends them small, plastic black angels. A black angel decorates her father’s grave and Edie is certain the small trinkets will send a message the guilty will not misinterpret.

But then the recipients of the black angels start dying, one by one. Redbud’s Sheriff Holt Drennan is certain Edie is involved somehow. When he and Edie become romantically involved, Holt is torn between protecting his town or protecting the life of the woman he has grown to love.

ONE DEADLY SIN is an amazing character-driven romantic thriller. The romantic aspect isn’t overwhelming, which is one of the many reasons I enjoyed this book. While there are a few steamy moments, the suspense can hold it’s own. I can typically figure out most “whodunits” but ONE DEADLY SIN kept me guessing, literally, to the very end.

Books Completed Last Week:

Another busy week. It was Teacher Appreciation Week and I’m a part of the PTO for my son’s school, so my evenings were spent preparing things for the festivities. Therefore, not much reading was done 🙁 This week I will have to play a bit of catch up!

Books to Read this Week:

One Deadly Sin by Annie Solomon (check back later this week…there’s a giveway!!)

I’m still plugging away at Angels of Destruction: A Novel by Keith Donohue. I’m listening to the audiobook, and it’s absolutely fabulous. I have two CDs before I finish. I don’t want the story to ever end.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. (Book Club pick) Believe it or not, I’m one of the few people on this planet that hasn’t read this book yet!

Cemetary Dance by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

The Way Home by George Pelecanos

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

Happy Mother's Day (Hint Hint..There's A Giveway!)

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! I hope all you mothers out there are having a wonderful day! This morning, I was allowed to sleep in until 7 (I typically get up around 5). I awoke to cinnamon rolls and a hot mug of coffee. Within a few minutes, I had a delicious breakfast in bed-eggs, hash browns, bacon and sausage. It was delicious. When I finally decided to get up and come downstairs, I discovered a nice gift my three year old left for me: he decided to use a funnel and pour syrup all over the kitchen table! A mother’s work is never done!

I couldn’t think of a better day to start my next contest than Mother’s Day! My next giveway is sponsored by Hardbacker.com. You may recall a few weeks ago I reviewed Hardbackers. Hardbackers turn any paperback book into a hardback, without damaging the book. The covers are designed to extend the life of your book by protecting both the front and back covers. The winner of this contest will win two hardbackers: one in trade paperback size and the other in workbook size (8 1/2 x 11″).

The Nine Lessons: A Novel of Love, Fatherhood, and Second Chances by Kevin Alan Milne

When August Wilte learns his wife is pregnant, he’s terrified. His own father, London, was less than perfect. To make things worse, his mother died when he was very young, so he’s never been exposed to “good” parenting.

August confronts his father, demanding an explanation for his failures. Instead, London suggests that meet once a month for a round of golf. Both men get what they want: London gets the chance to reintroduce his son to the game of golf, and August receives tidbits of memories of his mother on golf score cards that London used as a sort of diary.

August soon learns that his father’s motive isn’t just golf. Each golf lesson is actually a life lesson. By the time his wife has reached the end of her pregnancy, August has received nine lessons in life from his father.

I’ll have to admit, I was apprehensive about reading THE NINE LESSONS when I read the description. However, I enjoyed Milne’s other book THE PAPER BAG CHRISTMAS I thought I’d give him another chance. I’m glad I did. Milne’s characters are genuine and experience emotions we’ve all experienced. The messages relayed in THE NINE LESSONS are messages that we can all take to heart.

Here is just a sampling of some of the wisdom London passes on to August:

“Some days we play the game of life in the bloody rain. Not all days can be sunny skies and fair weather. But sooner or later the dark clouds dissipate…and the light shines through.”

“If your child happens to wonder out of bounds, stick by his side, let him know you’re there to help, and encourage him to get back on the fairway as quickly as possible.”

“Mind your own score…get rid of the mental tallies of who is doing what, and just work as a team to get everything done that needs to be done.”

“You’ve got to follow through. Even if it seems hard, you’ve got to force your body to do it.”

THE NINE LESSONS would be the perfect gift for a father-to-be, or any person attempting to overcome a obstacle or challenge in life. Don’t discount the book because on the surface it appears to be about golf, because after all, Golf IS life!

Kindle vs. Sony Reader–Your Thoughts?

I’m the proud owner of a Sony Reader (PRS 505). I’ve owned my Reader for about a year now, and I can’t say enough about this amazing gadget. I’m a frequent traveler, and my Reader has lightened my load considerably.

The Reader’s specs can be found on the Sony Web site. The PRS 505 Reader can now be purchased for $279. The PRS 700 BC, the next generation Reader, features an interactive touch screen display and built-in light. The 700 can be purchased for $349. The Reader is compatible with several different file formats, including Word & PDF. You simply have to import these documents into your library via your computer.

Amazon has releases two new Kindles in the past few months, the Kindle 2 ($359) and the Kindle DX ($489). The Kindle allows you to download books wirelessly and has a new Read to Me Feature. You can add your personal files to your Kindle, but you must pay a per document delivery fee.

The Kindle DX can display textbooks, and Amazon hopes that this will entice students to purchase it. I remember my college days, and I could barely afford my textbooks. I’m not certain students will be able to afford the $489 price tag, plus the cost of the textbooks. I could be wrong.

Now, I must state that I haven’t had the opportuny to test drive the Kindle, but I’m hopelessly devoted to my Sony Reader. I’m not a fan of the “control” Amazon has over the books that you can purchase for it, and the fact it is only sold in the States astounds me. Perhaps, given the chance to test the Kindle, my opinion might change, but don’t plan on it.

Let me finish by stating that yes, I still read “traditional” books, and no, I do not believe they are bordering on extinction. There will always be a use for traditional books.

e-Book readers simply make reading while traveling easier and make multiple books more portable. I receive on average 25 galleys or advance reading copies per month. Think about all the space I would save if those books were available electronically (and my husband would stop pulling his hair out at the site of books piled all over our home).

So, I have a few questions for you. Do you have an e-book reader? If yes, which one? If no, what are your thoughts on e-book readers? Which one would you buy?

Nineteen year-old Harmony Blue Kucharski is single, alone, and pregnant. She opts to put her son up for adoption. She had a difficult childhood and only wants the best for her son.

Twenty years later: Blue Reynolds is a very successful Chicago-based talk show hostess. She has everything that money can buy, everything but happiness. During the taping of a teen pregnancy show, Blue loses herself and begins to defend a young pregnant teen that is a guest of the show. Blue realizes what she’s missing in her life: knowing what happened to her son. She hires a private investigator to find the location and name of her son’s adoptive parents. He finds the location of the daughter of her midwife, and begins sending her money in return for her medical file.

While taping an episode of The Blue Reynold’s Show in Key West, Blue is reunited with Mitch Forrestor, her former English Professor. They had a relationship twenty years ago, and the dissolution of this relationship is what caused blue (then Harmony Blue) to rebound and find herself pregnant. Is this reunion Fate’s way of telling her to fight to regain everything she lost those decades ago?

When Blue decides to help Mitch produce his literary documentary, Literary Lions, Blue meets his thirty-something son, Julian. Julian puts a bit of a kink in Mitch and Blue’s potential relationship.

When her past is revealed, Blue must quickly decide just how much she is willing to relinquish in order to find true happiness. Reunion tells a a story that pulled me in during the first few pages. Blue’s character is a strong and honest one. One can’t help but feel for her and everything she was forced to experience in life. The secondary characters are extremely well-developed as well and serve as a backbone to the storyline. All of the characters are human, they have natural faults real challenges they are forced to address. The tale that Reunion portrays is a powerful one. Fowler’s writing paints the setting of Key West as if it were a painting that is being unveiled before our eyes. The imagery and detail pulls the reader into the story. I felt the sun beating on my face, smelled the warm ocean breeze. The ending leaves me begging for a sequel so I can follow the characters on their journey of rediscovery

Reunion is the perfect book to take along with you to the beach, or in my case, to read on a rainy day.

Giveaway: Made in the U.S.A. by Billie Letts

Thanks to Valerie at Hachette Book Group, I have FIVE copies of Made in the U.S.A. by Billie Letts to give away!

BOOK INFORMATION:
The bestselling author of WHERE THE HEART IS returns with a heartrending tale of two children in search of a place to call home.

Lutie McFee’s history has taught her to avoid attachments…to people, to places, and to almost everything. With her mother long dead and her father long gone to find his fortune in Las Vegas, 15-year-old Lutie lives in the god-forsaken town of Spearfish, South Dakota with her twelve-year-old brother, Fate, and Floy Satterfield, the 300-pound ex-girlfriend of her father.

While Lutie shoplifts for kicks, Fate spends most of his time reading, watching weird TV shows and worrying about global warming and the endangerment of pandas. As if their life is not dismal enough, one day, while shopping in their local Wal-Mart, Floy keels over and the two motherless kids are suddenly faced with the choice of becoming wards of the state or hightailing it out of town in Floy’s old Pontiac. Choosing the latter, they head off to Las Vegas in search of a father who has no known address, no phone number and, clearly, no interest in the kids he left behind.

MADE IN THE U.S.A. is the alternately heartbreaking and life-affirming story of two gutsy children who must discover how cruel, unfair and frightening the world is before they come to a place they can finally call home.
