Review: Shades of Gray: A Novel of the Civil War in Virginia by Jessica James

Set in Civil War Virginia, SHADES OF GRAY is a powerful tale of loyalty and the love of one’s country. Andrea Evans, a Union spy, disguises herself as a young boy to defend her country. She crosses paths with Captain Alexander Hunter, a Confederate officer. Hunter, unaware of her true identity, becomes obsessed with bringing down the young soldier that caused the deaths of several of his men. They meet again at the deathbed of Hunter’s brother, Daniel, a Union officer. Hunter promises his brother to protect Andrea at all costs. Andrea is captured by the Confederates and severely injured. Hunter, abiding by the promise he made his brother, takes her to his home to heal. Evans detests Hunter, but due to her injuries she is unable to leave Hunter’s home, Hawthorne. Despite their differing allegiances, both Hunter and Evans let down the wall surrounding their hearts, and fall in love. Civil war raging around them, they cannot deny the love they share, a love that transcends the battle lines.

SHADES OF GRAY is an amazing book full of historical detail. The reader is pulled into the raging war. I loved the characters—they were well developed and defined. I was pulled in from page one and was saddened when the story ended. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of historical fiction!

Review: Perfect on Paper: The (Mis)adventures of Waverly Bryson, by Maria Murnane

It’s the day every woman remembers—her wedding day.For Waverly Bryson, it’s a day she’ll never forget. Before she can even walk down the aisle, her fiancée calls off the wedding, claiming that they weren’t meant to be.Waverly’s life goes in a downward spiral. In addition to the breakup, she has a horrible relationship with her father, and her job in sports PR isn’t quite as exciting as it should be. But one thing Waverly is able to retain is her sense of humor. When times are bad, she writes “honey” notes to herself, putting a humorous spin on that particular situation. Example: “Life has its ups and downs, right? Honey, if you’re talking about my weight and my bank account the unfortunate answer is yes, in that order.“ Waverly’s “honey” turn out to be the key that opens to door to her success and happiness.

PERFECT ON PAPER is a hilarious and addictive book. I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down.Waverly’s character leaves you laughing so hard you cry! Waverly, and her close network of friends, are unforgettable and easy to relate to.Each chapter begins with a “honey” note.I jotted several down myself!PERFECT ON PAPER is definitely a book I would recommend!

Review: The Missing, by Sarah Langan

Corpus Christi is a quiet, wealthy community in Maine. It survived the fire of neighboring Bedford. A building full of chemicals was burned, along with most of Bedord. Dozens of people were killed by the fumes. Wildlife and vegetation was destroyed as well. A year later, the EPA declares Bedford safe. Lois Larkin, a third-grade schoolteacher, takes her class on a field trip to Bedford. Her students would love to explore the “ghost-town”. Instead, a evil once buried is revealed, and is spread like wildfire to all of Corpus Christi. Victims are transformed into hungry, violent creatures. Those that aren’t transformed die a horried and painful death. There appears to be no stopping this horrid plague. It’s hunger cannot be stifled, and it spreads beyond the confines of once tranquil Corpus Christi.

THE MISSING was an chilling tale from the beginning. Langan has great talent, very reminescent of Stephen King. Highly recommended to anyone seeking a good scare!!

My Computer Died :(

So I got home from work last night. Went to turn on my laptop and it failed to start. Thought it might be the power cord I was using, so I tried another. Nothing. Contacted Dell, and the motherboard is fried. Wouldn’t make sense to repair it. I’ve only had the computer for a year, but unfortunately the warranty expired in October. So, until I can afford to purchase a new one, I’ll have to attempt to share computer time with my husband :(. Well..my husband was concerned that he didn’t know what to get me for Christmas. Now he has a great (albeit expensive) gift idea.

So, I’ll post when I can. We’re traveling for the holidays, my first experience traveling without my laptop. I’m certain I’ll feel as though I’m missing a limb.

Injured by a Book, Part Two

So, I went to see an orthopedist today. I was in more pain than I thought I should be. He ordered new X-rays. So, not only did I strain my ankle, break a few toes, but apparently I have stress fractures all throughout my foot and ankle. Nice, eh? I’ve been attempting to walk on this ankle all week. Afterall, the ER doc stated that he strain/sprain in my ankle was very minor, and I was told that I could put weight on it. Not so much! So, now I’m forced to wear an air/walking cast (AKA DAS BOOT!)for at least ten days. After that, I have to wear a special ankle brace. When I’m allowed to wear a shoe again, I’ve been “prescribed” these hideous clog-looking shoes.

Those who know me well know how much I love shoes. I have quite an addiction. All of my shoes are in clear plastic, labeled shoe boxes. All of those shoes will be collecting dust for a few months :(.

Ok..so the book part of this post! I’ve been reading, but due to the pain meds I’ve been on I haven’t been able to write my reviews. I’m off the meds now and hope to be able to write again tonight and tomorrow!

Also, you still have time to enter my awesome audio book contest! I’ll announce the winner tomorrow!

Injured by a Book

Yes, you read it right. I was injured by a book. I got up this morning and went to look out the window. It’s pretty cold here and we’re expecting snow, so I wanted to see if we’d gotten any overnight. I was walking back through my room and saw that my three year old, Justin, was awake and standing in the hallway. I started to walk toward him to tell him that he didn’t have to get up yet (it was barely 7 am!) and that’s when it happened. One of his books was on the floor and I slid on it and fell. Fractured my first two toes. I’ve been ordered by the ER docs to keep it elevated, don’t walk on it, and ice it. I’ve been given some pretty hefty pain meds, too, which prevent me from driving. So much for my weekend shopping plans.

Instead I’ll spend it in bed, ankle propped up on pillows, catching up on the shows I’ve Tivo-ed, the two LOST DVDs I got from Netflix, and a few books!
