Guest Post: Irene Watson, Author of THE SITTING SWING

My Moment of Breakthrough

When I set out to write my memoir, The Sitting Swing: Finding Wisdom to Know the Difference, it was my purpose to tell the story of a breakthrough I’d had about who I was and who I had become; the breakthrough freed me to become who I wanted to be.

For me to have that breakthrough, it meant I had to understand my own dysfunctional behaviors and what had formed them. Whether you come from an extremely dysfunctional family or a relatively happy (mildly dysfunctional) one, your family situation taught you specific behaviors as well as coping mechanisms to deal with your family members’ behaviors, actions or attitudes. No family is perfect, and every individual must learn to adjust to living with his or her family members even in the best of families. Sometimes this means repressing memories of what happened; sometimes this means being a child who accepts physical or verbal abuse from an adult from fear of worse if you don’t submit. Sometimes, it’s simply going along with your mother’s belief system to avoid an argument.

We learn behaviors that allow us to function within the family unit with as little disagreement among family members as possible—sometimes it may seem all the family has to offer is disagreement—but we learn to function and cope within that framework.

We have learned to protect ourselves. But when we reach adulthood, we may find that what had protected us from negative situations now inhibits us from enjoying life.

In The Sitting Swing, I recall my visit to the Avalon Recovery Center. I went there as a practicing therapist wanting to learn how better to help my clients. I had no idea I would learn how to help myself. It wasn’t until I visited Avalon that I learned how I had repressed my ability to love. Prior to that visit, I had largely been in denial of my feelings and afraid to love from fear I would be hurt. When my marriage was not as happy as I hoped it could be, I blamed my husband for not loving me the way he should.

I was frustrated that my husband did not support me in my personal and career goals the way I thought he should. He always had an excuse, such as bills to pay, for why I couldn’t have what I wanted. I thought if anything, he needed to see a therapist to figure out what went wrong in his past that made him so controlling.

While the problems with my marriage had long nagged at me, it wasn’t until my visit to Avalon that I was ready to analyze them. At first, I tried to analyze what was wrong with my husband, but the counselors told me to look deeper. I tried then to analyze why I let him have control rather than fulfilling my purpose in life. Eventually, I realized I was interpreting everything my husband said or did from my belief he was controlling me, rather than actually listening to him or trying to understand his viewpoint.

That was when I had my breakthrough. I realized my husband was not trying to control me. He was just looking at things from a practical, often financial standpoint. I had not taken the time to try to see things his way because I was too demanding to have my own way. It was about communication and understanding—that’s what had been missing in our marriage, in my understanding of our marriage.

I learned that day that I had to be an individual, depending on myself rather than letting my husband control me. Perhaps more importantly, I learned that a marriage is about teamwork and we had to look at things from each other’s viewpoint and to support each other’s goals. I also was filled with renewed love for my husband, realizing he had made his own sacrifices to be with me. Since that day, new understanding sprang up between us.

That moment of breakthrough—of realizing I was keeping myself from happiness by practicing the protective measures I had learned in childhood, and by selfishly looking to my husband to fulfill the wants left from my childhood—that moment freed me.

That’s only part of the story I tell in The Sitting Swing. I hope, by telling my personal story, I help other people have their own breakthroughs. I hope I give them courage to explore what holds them back, and the courage to change.

Check back tomorrow for my review of THE SITTING SWING.

Review, Blog Tour & Giveaway: The Accidental Bestseller by Wendy Wax

At a writers conference ten years ago, four aspiring writers met and became close friends. A decade later they are still friends, and very much a part of one another’s lives.

Kendell Aim’s writing career is in danger. Her editor goes on maternity leave, and her new editor shows no interest in her work.

Mallory St. James is an obsessed workaholic. She’s constantly working on yet another best seller.

Tanya Mason is a single mom who supports her two kids and difficult mother by working two jobs.

Faye Truett is married to a televangelist and writes inspirational romances. She has a secret that no one would dare to believe.

Kendell has a quickly approaching book deadline that she needs to meet, but when she learns her husband has been cheating, she flees to her vacation home. Rather than focus on her writing, she works at fixing up her mountain hideaway. Her friends won’t allow her to bear this burden alone and come together in a sort of intervention. They collaborate on a novel based on their own lives. Each of them writes a segment of the book, all under Kendell’s name.

But they would have never guessed that the book would reach the NY Times Bestseller’s list. When the truth is revealed on a day time talk show, they are each forced to reveal a secret they’d kept from one another. Their friendship has survived the years, but will it survive this?

THE ACCIDENTAL BESTSELLER is an intriguing glimpse into the world of publishing and the difficulties that authors must face. It was interesting to learn about how many hands manuscripts pass through on the way to publication. Each of the characters suffer realistic insecurites about their writing and personal lives. I learned a great deal about the publishing process in my reading of THE ACCIDENTAL BESTSELLER. It makes me appreciate and value writers even more!

About the Author:

A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, Wendy has come a long way since her days at Sunshine Elementary School. As a child she read voraciously, was a regular at her local library, and became fast friends with Nancy Drew and Anne of Green Gables. Her love affairs with language and storytelling paid off beginning with her first shift at the campus radio station while studying journalism at the University of Georgia.

After returning to her home state and graduating from the University of South Florida she worked for the Tampa PBS affiliate, WEDU-TV, behind and in front of the camera. Her resume includes on air work, voiceovers and production of a variety of commercial projects and several feature films. She may be best known in the Tampa Bay area as the host of Desperate & Dateless, a radio matchmaking program that aired on WDAE radio, and nationally as host of The Home Front, a magazine format show that aired on PBS affiliates across the country.

The mother of a toddler and an infant when she decided to change careers, she admits it was not the best timing in terms of productivity. “I’m still not certain why I felt so compelled to write my first novel at that particular time,” she says, “but that first book took forever.” Since then she’s written six more books, including Single in Suburbia and THE ACCIDENTAL BESTSELLER. Her work has been sold to publishers in ten countries and to the Rhapsody Book Club. Her novel, Hostile Makeover, was excerpted in Cosmopolitan magazine.

Wendy lives with her husband John and her baseball-crazy teenage sons in the Atlanta suburbs where she spends most of her non-writing time on baseball fields or driving to them. She continues to devour books and is busy producing Accidental Radio, a new feature on her web site.

BEA Highlights, Day Two (Friday)

Despite the long and stressful day I had on Thursday, I still awoke bright and early at 4:15 am so I could join a bunch of other book bloggers who stood in line for tickets to author signings.

When we checked in to the hotel, we were informed that the city was working on the sewer system, and hot water wouldn’t be available until after 4 am. I’m an eternal optimist and assured myself that I’d be able to hop in the shower at 4:15 am and the hot water would be available. Once again, I was wrong. Nothing but cold water! Needless to say, after my very quick shower, I was awake and invigorated.

We arrived at the Javits Center around 5:30 and stood in line for author signing tickets. My goal was to get a tickets for the Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and Little Bird of Heaven by Joyce Carol Oates. Luck was on my side…tickets were obtained.

After getting breakfast at a local diner, it was finally time for the exhibit hall to open. The ribbon was cut and I walked in to a book lovers heaven! Rows and rows of publishers, “bookish” vendors, you name it. I finally had a chance to meet Miriam from Hachette after working with her for over a year now!

Finally it was time for my first ticketed author signing. First up, Joyce Carol Oates. Now, I have to admit, I didn’t really look at the author signing schedule before arriving in NY. After getting my signed copy of Little Bird of Heaven, I had to rush upstairs for my book blogger signing at the Firebrand booth. I was impressed at the number of people interested in book bloggers and what we did, and spent an hour answering their questions. I was pleasantly surprised when Shane Briant, author of The Worst Nightmare stopped by to introduce himself. I will be reviewing his book (and hosting a giveway) in the next month. I also finally got to meet Tyler from Scholastic Books-an amazing resource and overall great guy!

Immediately after my signing was Suzanne Collins’ author signing, so I literally ran across the exhibit hall and downstairs to the signing area. I was dismayed at the seemingly endless line, but it moved quickly and I obtained my signed copy.

I remained in the author signing area for several hours, and got to meet Melissa Marr, Sarwat Chadda, Luis Alberto Urea and his wife, Cindy (who both squealed in delight when I told them who I was!).

Late that afternoon, I met with Emily from Sourcebooks. My family has always been a fan of the books Sourcebooks publishes (expecially Horrid Henry!) so I was thrilled to sit down and talk with Emily about ways that we can work together.

By this time I was exhausted. I’d slept for a mere 3 hours the night before and had been on my feet for several hours. But the night wasn’t close to being over!

After a quick trip back to the hotel for dinner (complimentary due to the lack of hot water!) we went to the BEAtweetup, the first Tweet up for Book Expo America. It was packed with bookish people, of all types, including publicists, authors, etc. Here I met Valerie Russo from Hachette, Frasier and the GetGlue gang, Bethanne Patrick (aka Bookmaven) and many many other great people!

The night was still young, so we jumped in a cab and went to a Kidlit party. I met some great YA authors, which I was exceedingly happy about because I’m interesting in expanding my reviews to YA fiction.

The night came to an end and after returning to the hotel, I quickly succumbed to a deep sleep…

BEA Highlights-Day One (Thursday)

I’m on the train headed home from NY and BEA (Book Expo America). I opted for the quiet car on the train, needed time to reflect and absorb the entire weekend.

This was my first trip to BEA. I’d seen write-ups on past BEAs and thought I had a general understanding of what to expect. Boy, was I wrong!

My trip to NY was downright horrid. I decided to fly up to NY rather than taking train. We were experiencing thunderstorms in the DC area and air traffic control shut down all air traffic. My flight was supposed to depart at 5 pm and didn’t depart until almost nine. To make things worse, we weren’t even sitting in the airport. We were in the plane, stuck on the tarmac, waiting in line to take off. Over an hour passed and they started letting planes take off. Of course, half of our plane was filled with passengers with connections. They were no longer going to make these connections and requested that they be returned back to the gate. So, our plane gets out of line and slowly returns to the gate to allow people to get off. Luckily, we’re able to get back to our spot in line and take off three hours after we were scheduled.

Now, I must mention, Trish from Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin’? was waiting for me at JFK. She and I were roomies for the duration of BEA. Originally, had my plane been on time, she would have only had to wait around 30 minutes for my plane to arrive. Instead, she waited at the airport for 5 hours! So I wanted to thank her again for waiting for me!

Ok, so I get to JFK, meet up with Trish, and then we board a shuttle to Manhattan. Have you seen The Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix movie? Remember the really scary bus driver, who zoomed all throughout London, barely avoiding several severe accidents? Well, I think that was our bus driver! He drove at speeds that exceeded, in my opinion, the safest speed for a bus of that size.

We arrived at our hotel around midnight, and hit the sack relatively early because we had plans to head to the Javits center to pick up a few author signing tickets. While my travel experience to NY was less than desireable and I was beyond exhausted, it was difficult for me to fall asleep, knowing what I was about to experience the following day…

I'm Bound for BEA!

On Thursday, I’m hopping on a plane to NY to attend BEA (Book Expo America) for the first time. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have this opportunity to meet some amazing authors and finally get a chance to meet some of the wonderful book bloggers I’ve been following and tweeting with over the past year and a half! In addition, I’ll finally get to meet some of the amazing publicists I’ve worked with over the years.

Some things I’m really looking forward to:

Friday

  • From 2-3 pm I will be one of over 40 bloggers at the Firebrand Technologies booth (#4077). If you are coming to BEA, stop by and see me! Be sure to bring your business cards! Visitors to the booth will be entered to win a Sony Reader! Click here for a list of book bloggers that will be signing.

  • Friday night is the BEAtweetup, which is the “unauthorized, unofficial, and entirely necessary Tweet-Up for Book Expo America 2009, complete with music, dancing, Belvedere Vodka literary themed cocktails, and Bookish Tweeps from all corners of the universe.” Over 400 bookish people will be in attendance (plus there’s a waiting list!)

Saturday

  • I will be interviewing Neil Jones, inventor of COOL-ER, the elegant and affordable e-Reader. Any questions you’d like answered?

Here is a line up of the panelists:

Amy from My Friend Amy
Beth from Beth Fish Reads
Dawn from She is Too Fond of Books
Julie from Booking Mama
Natalie from Maw Books
Stephanie from The Written Word

I’m attempting to learn how to post via my blackberry, so check back later in the week for BEA updates!

Teaser Tuesday-May 26

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along!

Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser comes from THE SECRET SPEECH by Tom Rob Smith:

“As the cloud thinned it revealed a hole in the wall twice the height of a man and equally wide. The damage made it appear as if a giant had accidentally put the tip of his boot through the church and then apologetically retracted his foot, sparing the rest of the building.”

What’s your teaser?

Review: Angels of Destruction by Keith Donohue

Ten years ago, Margaret Quinn lost her only daughter, Erica. Erica ran away with her high school boyfriend, set on joining the Angels of Destruction, a radical student group. She hasn’t heard from or spoken to Erica in all this time.

One night, Margaret is startled when a nine year old orphan shows up on her doorstep one cold winter night. Mrs. Quinn takes in the child, and comes up with a plan to pass her off as Norah Quinn, her granddaughter and the daughter of her long-missing Erica.

Mrs. Quinn introduces Nora to Sean Fallon, a lonely neighborhood boy, and requests that he escort Nora to and from school each day. The community seems to accept the story of Nora’s past, until she starts proclaiming she is an angel. The school and the community are in an uproar after Nora puts the lives of several children at risk in order to prove that she has divine powers. Who is this little girl, and where has she come from? And who is this mysterious man that seems to lurk in her shadow?

The secondary storyline revolves around Erica. Donohue uses flashbacks to inform the reader of her terrifying trek to what she believes is her salvation, but in actuality it almost brings upon her destruction.

ANGELS OF DESTRUCTION is a powerful and unforgettable tale about love, trust, and heartbreak. I find Donohue’s writing to be mesmerizing, and his character development is astounding. I listened to the audio version of this book and it felt as thought the characters and the writing was so detailed that it felt as though the characters and storyline were developing around me. Highly recommended! One of my favorite books so far for 2009!
