I’m reading what is probably Timothy Hallinan’s best Poke Rafferty book to date: THE QUEEN OF PATPONG. It’s wonderful in all the ways that each of the Poke books have been: strong, colorful characters; detailed sense of place; dialogue that pulls you into the story; imagery beyond compare. In this outting, Tim has exceeded the passion in his plot, which I never thought would be possible, but he did it. Magnificent!

On audio I’m listening to Paul Levine’s SOLOMON VS LORD which is wonderful. It’s funny and the plot is engaging. The characters are fun. Great entertainment all around.

I really enjoyed THINK OF A NUMBER. What a smooth debut novel. And just finished the upcoming Louise Penny, BURY YOUR DEAD (oh my, oh my).

This week I’ll try to concentrate on finishing books already under way, including BEST AMERICAN NOIR OF THE CENTURY.

I really want to read Labor Day — I hope you are enjoying it!

  10. I can’t wait to see what you think of Think of a Number – I bet it’s creepy!

  11. I’m currently flailing my way through Alison Weir’s new book, “The Captive Queen.” After that I’ll need something refreshing (and also something not hist fic, since this is my 3rd hist fic in a row), so I think the rest of the week will be “The Stuff That Never Happened” like you, along with “The Rembrandt Affair” by Daniel Silva and “29″ by Adena Halpern. In audio I’m currently listening to “The Quickening” and probably will be for most of the week. I’m not entirely sure what my next audio will be, possibly “Catching Fire,” or maybe “The City and the City” or “The Weed That Strings The Hangman’s Bag”.

  12. I have heard some good things about Think Of A Number. Hope you enjoy it :)

  13. I was looking at Labor Day at the library today. I should have checked it out.

  14. Did you like Labor Day? I wasn’t able to get over the creep factor with the man and the Mom letting him stay. I read the book, it would be a good book club selection (a lot to discuss).

Great reading week for you! Have a wonderful week!
