Those that know me well know that I LOVE horror books and movies. I attempted to read and review only horror books for the month of October. Well, it’s the end of October and you can clearly see that hasn’t happened. Instead, I’m doing a mini-marathon of horror for Halloween week (thanks for the idea, Becky!)
My first horror book for the week is Bentley Little’s The Academy. No particular reason for starting off horror week with this book, it just happened to be the first book I grabbed off of my overwhelming and overflowing horror bookshelf.
From Publisher’s Weekly :
School principal Jody Hawkes, known for being easygoing, decides to turn John Tyler High into a charter school without notifying any of her staff. At first, as Jody promises additional freedom and autonomy, most faculty embrace the changes-but it soon becomes clear that a evil bait and switch is underway. Students and faculty who embrace the charter get steadily darker and more sadistic; teachers and students who oppose the charter find strange things happening and people disappearing; and the school seems to have taken on a life of its own. The resolution is painfully simple, but overall Little crafts a tightly allegorical piece of horror.
Stay tuned for my review! Also be on the lookout for my reviews of Heather Graham’s DEADLY HARVEST, and a special Halloween guest post by the author of INSIDE A HAUNTED MIND and THE DIGGER’S REST, K.Patrick Malone!
And, to enter to win a ghoulish grab bag of Halloween goodies, please comment below about your favorite horror novel or movie!

I know it’s not a real story but I still love the first Amityville Horror movie. I’ve not read the book but I’m sure it’s good. The second movie was okay but not was good as the first.
Don’t enter me Jenn. I just wanted to say I’ve read Bentley Little before and really liked it. Scary books that have freaked me out are the Omen books, Salem’s Lot and The Shining.
I’m not big on scary movies, so any of the ones i’ve seen aren’t really classified as “horror” but i do love cry wolf and the sixth sense is a very unique idea.
one of my favorite scary novels is Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. very good.

A Halloween grab bag of goodies! How awesome! A favorite horror movie or novel, eh. It’s so hard to pick a fave. They all kind of depend on the mood I’m in. At the moment, and since I just read it so it sticks out in my mind, I have to say King’s Duma Key was utterly fantastic. As far as movies go, 28 Days Later or, on the quieter end, The Others are tops on my list to rewatch very soon.
Deadly Harvest was pretty good. I also really liked book one, Deadly Night, and can’t wait to read Deadly Gift.
Have fun and happy horror reading!
A book about a principal changing the school without consulting staff? That alone sounds like a scary book for us teachers.
Sounds interesting.
Scary book… It by Stephen King. I am still scared of Clowns.
My fave horror movie would be the Thai version of Shutter!

I have to second IT by Stephen King- my favorite horror book of all time. As for movies you really can’t go wrong with movies put out by Asia Extreme gory gruesome Asian horror that puts American horror movies to shame.
One of the more recent horror movies I’ve seen is Inside aka À l’intérieur. It’s a french horror movie and is probably one of the most disturbing scary movies I’ve seen; nothing supernatural in it really either. Not reccomended for all but very good.

Hmmmmmm….I would have to say that my scariest book was Midnight is a Lonely Place by Barbara Erskine but I remember years ago never finishing It because I was reading it while I was sick and woke up with a fever, having horrible dreams of clowns.
I never finished the book.

I would love to be entered for this contest. One of my favorite horror books is The Overnight by Ramsey Campbell.

I love scary books too! I was trying to read a bunch for this month and my attempts didn’t go so well either. It’s a good thing books don’t expire! Stephen King and Dean Koontz are always favorites. The Shining, book and movie, have always scared me. Scary books with a sense of humor, like Christopher Moore’s are a riot. I haven’t read The Academy yet but it also sounds good. Please enter me in your contest too and thanks for your offer.
