Frightful Friday is a weekly meme in which I feature a particularly scary or chilling book that I’ve read that week.

This week’s featured book is Supernatural: Bobby Singer’s Guide to Hunting.

Fans of the Supernatural television series are very well familiar with Bobby Singer, the hunter that keeps Sam & Dean Winchester alive. He has the history, the knowledge of the evil creatures that he and the brothers hunt.

In Supernatural: Bobby Singer’s Guide to Hunting, Bobby is losing his memory. He’s not sure why, but obviously it terrifies him. He uses this guide as a means to keeping track of the vast knowledge he holds, passing on his legacy to the Winchester boys. He does this by flashing back to the instances in which he hunted, with each “creature” giving their weaknesses & strengths, the things that will kill them, the things that will not.

Reed does an outstanding job at capturing Bobby’s “essense.” Bobby’s overal demeanor, attitude is quite crass at times. He’s a “tell it as he sees it” kind of guy. Reed picks up on that and really takes off with it. I felt as though I was really reading a book written by Bobby (yes, I realize he’s a fictional character). He uses Bobby’s terminology (Ya Idjit!)

One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the history on Bobby’s wife. Fans of Supernatural know the history with her demise, but in this book, Bobby relives that experience, nothing held back, everything revealed. Additionally, we learn how Bobby met all the various other hunters throughout his career. It was really great to learn about their history, including that of Sam & Dean’s father. Also, further explanation is given on some of the items that frequently appear in the television series, including the Colt & Dean’s amulet.

Fans of Supernatural are sure to enjoy this book. It does make references to things that took place in the most current seasons, so it would probably be best to catch up on your Supernatural episodes before taking this book on. Additionally, I think the length of the book is perfect; not too long, not too short. Just enough to grab your attention without overwhelming with information.  A perfect gift for any fan of the Supernatural series. Highly recommended!

Last year, my boys & I reviewed Pamela Jane’s A Vampire is Coming to Dinner.  Here’s a synopsis from Publisher’s Weekly: Read along as the narrator of this story comes up with some practical rules for dealing with a vampire. But rules are meant to be broken, aren’t they? From feeding the vampire garlic to filling the house with mirrors, the narrator is doing just that! With ten full-page gatefolds and a pop at the end of the book, kids will love seeing which rules are being followed and which aren’t! If you’re expecting a vampire (invited or not) this is your chance to get ready for a night of pranks and surprises. It is best to be prepared. “…a ghoulishly good time.”

When I learned she recently released another Halloween picture book, I couldn’t resist!

Little Goblins Ten is an adorable take on the popular Over in the Meadow story:

Over in the forest
Where the trees hide the sun
Lived a big mommy monster
And her little monster one

The rhyming text and rich illustrations (by Jane Manning) really add to the overall experience of reading this picture book. My youngest son is six; this has become his favorite Halloween book this year. We’ve read it at least a dozen times.  He’s so familiar with the text he can read it on his own.  After we read this one, I introduced him to the original “Over in the Meadow.” His response: “Mom! That’s a book for spring. This is fall…it’s all about Halloween!”  That’s my boy!

 Little Goblins Ten is destined to be a favorite of many this Halloween! I highly recommend that libraries add it to their permanent collection! While there is clearly a Halloween theme, I believe this is a book that can be appreciated year-round! Highly recommended!

Harry Hole, Oslo police detective, is called in to investigate the murder of a young woman.  Her finger was amputated and a red diamond is tucked under her eyelid.  More women are found murdered, each with a similar red diamond on the body.   Also assigned to this case is Tom Waaler, the man Harry suspected of killing Ellen Gjelten, his partner.

To say that Harry’s life is in the dumps is an understatement. He’s become obsessed with tracking Ellen’s killer and the powers-that-be in his department threaten to terminate his employment if he doesn’t end this obsession, or provide proof of such a crime.  This obsession has also ruined his relationship with his girlfriend, Rakel.  This all leaves Harry with not much to live for, so he embarks upon a four-week drinking binge

It’s up to Harry to decide which crime to pursue: the seemingly unsolvable murder of his partner or that of these murdered women.  No matter which path he takes is dark…the result unknown.

This is my first experience with Nesbo’s writing and I’m astounded by the complexities of this thriller. The Devil’s Star is full of rich, extremely well detailed characters.  While this isn’t the first book in  this series, Nesbo provides an immense amount of back story.

Harry’s character seems to grow, then fade, right before your eyes. His was one I found hard to like at times; he’s not known to follow the rules.  Frankly, I think he thrives on being an outcast.

This book isn’t a thriller you can rush through to learn the identity of the killer.  It is one that must be savored.  The text must be absorbed, savored, and contemplated, for before you know it you will have reached the last page, desperate to start again from the beginning.

While this is my first taste of Nesbo’s writing it most certainly it is not my last.  Highly recommended for fans of literary thrillers…and books that really make you think.

Aldwyn is a rough & tough alley cat on the run from a bounty hunter.  He’s able to sneak into a shop and avoids capture.  Aldwyn finds himself surrounded by animals of all shapes, sizes, & colors.  They aren’t your standard pet store animals, however.  They are familiars-animal companions of witches & wizards-and within moments Aldwyn is mistaken for one and adopted by a young boy

When he arrives at his new home, Aldwyn is introduced to the other familiars in the home: Skylar, a blue jay, a bit arrogant about her abilities and Gilbert, a red-eye tree frog who spends most of his time obsessing about when he’s going to eat next.  Fearful for blowing his cover, Aldwyn tells the others that he has telekinetic & mind-reading powers.

Just as he starts to get settled into his new home, Aldwyn’s “loyal” Jack, his sister, and another student are kidnapped. Aldwyn, Skylar, & Gilbert are the only ones who can save them. Throughout the journey, Aldwyn learns a great deal about the others, and himself. It turns out he might be a little more than the “average” alley cat!

I read THE FAMILIARS aloud to both of my boys.  Despite their six-year age difference, both boys thoroughly enjoyed this book. We’re a house full of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc. so it wasn’t a surprise.  We all fell in love with the familiars (it doesn’t hurt that our cat, Sylvester, is the spitting image of Aldwyn).  They enjoyed the fast-paced excitement; there really is never a dull moment in this book. The art by Peter Chan & Kei Acedera really enhanced the reading experience as well.  My youngest is 5, so sometimes it takes a few pictures to keep him engaged. Here are just a few samples of the art:

Considering this is a book written jointly by two authors, I assumed the writing would be disjointed or unorganized.  Far from it!  It’s seamless, impossible to tell the difference in the writers’ voices.  I’m excited to see that Adam & Andrew plan to continue this series and a move is in the works as well.  Highly recommended!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this collection of stories, also retold by Alvin Schwartz, who I consider the king of scary tales for children. In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories (I Can Read Books) is perhaps one of my favorite scary stories books for early readers.  Schwartz has collected eight scary stories, all in a format that is easy to read for early readers.  The text is large, the sentences are short and the vocabulary is easy.  Overall, a great introduction to scary stories for children.

Here are just a few of my favorite stories:

The Green Ribbon: There was once a little girl named Jenny.  She was your average young girl, except she always wore a green ribbon around her neck.

There was a young boy named Alfred who liked Jenny, and Jenny liked him in return.  Alfred asked Jenny about the ribbon, but Jenny told him she couldn’t tell him about it.  Jenny & Alfred grew up, fell in love, and got married. After the wedding, Alfred once again asked about the ribbon. Jenny insisted that she’d tell him about it when the time was right.

Jenny & Alfred grew old, and Jenny got sick.  The doctor confirmed that she would soon die. She called Alfred to his side and said she could now tell him about the ribbon.  Alfred carefully removed the ribbon…and Jenny’s head fell off.

Let me tell you how much the story terrified me as a child! For the longest time I was wary of women who wore scarves or anything tied around their necks.

In A Dark, Dark Room: This story is my boys’ favorite!  It starts out by describing things in a dark, dark, house. In that dark, dark, house, there is a dark, dark room. In that dark, dark room, there is a chest, etc. etc. My boys loved to read this story along with me and at 11 and 5, both have it memorized.

The Pirate: Ruth was spending her summer with her cousin, Susan.  Susan informs her that a pirate used to live in their house. The pirate died and reportedly haunts the room in which Ruth is staying.  The family doesn’t believe in ghosts and haven’t seen anything to change their mind.  Ruth goes to her room and looks under the bed, in the closet, under the rug, etc.  She doesn’t find anything, so she exclaims “There is nobody in this room but me.” A voice replies…”And ME!”

This story plays with every child’s fear of something living under the bed, or in the closet.  However, telling it verbally versus reading it aloud adds a bit more fear to it.  One of the many things I enjoy about this book is the illustrations.  They make the stories a little scary, but a lot of fun!

Roy Vines and his wife Rosalind, like the rest of the residents of the rural North Carolina town in which they lived, have hit upon rough times. Rosalind is experiencing health problems and they don’t have the money to seek the medical help she needs.  Roy is forced to ask his family for help, the same family that disowned him when he married Rosalind. He’s must do something he never wanted to do, ask his twin brother Mont for money.

Mont agrees to help his brother but not without a catch: Roy must open his home to Lucas, a seventeen-year-old boy raised believing that Roy was his father and had abandoned him and his late mother. Rosalind is torn; her declining health is forcing them into a situation that is reopening old family wounds.

Luke resents his “father” initially, but the kindness that Roy and Rosalind, and their two daughters Lola and Janie Ray, show Luke soon puts a damper on the burning hate. Luke begins to realize that nothing is really as it seems and wonders if he will ever know the truth.

LEAVING BEFORE IT’S OVER  is a heartwarming family drama.  The characters, most living in a small, close-knit town, will stop at nothing to help those around them.  All of the characters, not only Luke, go through a bit of self-discovery and actualization. Despite all the family drama, this book is quite the comforting read. The Vine family exudes love for one another, despite all the obstacles they are forced to face.  The meaning of family is clearly apparent in this family. 

I highly recommend reading LEAVING BEFORE IT’S OVER.  It’s a short, quick read, the perfect book to warm your heart on a cool fall day.

When they were young, Bobby rescued Cami from debilitating anorexia.  Decades later, she needs saving again when he decides he wants to end their marriage.  Cami is devastated.  She’s a veterinarian, running her own practice and Bobby owns his own restaurant.  While things weren’t perfect, she never expected this.

Earlier that day, Cami goes on on a horrible cruelty & abuse case in which she has to euthanize several horses beyond healing.  One of the survivors is a severely underweight horse with a serious back kick.  Even though he literally knocks Cami out when she attempts to load him onto her trailer, she can’t bear to leave him in the current conditions and she takes him home to her farm.

Despite the rough start, this horse, eventually named Moonshot, becomes a key part of Cami’s physical and emotional recovery.  Her form of healing is in the presence of animals.

She’s torn between following the advice of her family and trying to mend a broken marriage and finding a life of her own.  She starts to evaluate and reconsider the relationships of those around her: her parents who are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary; her brother and his lover, trying to adopt a baby; and her best friend Olive, just embarking on the adventure of marriage.

Inspiring her is their teen daughter, Gabriella.  Gabriella sees the pain her father has put her mother through and swears of marriage.  Cami can’t bear to see her daughter feel this way about love and marriage.  She must prove to Gabriella, and herself, that being true to yourself brings happiness.

I think I’ve read everything Katrina Kittle has ever written, and I’ve literally fallen in love with every bit of it.  Her books, the characters, the storyline are all very compelling, multifaceted, and really leave you contemplating your own life.  You close the book, the only words that come to your lips are “Wow!”, and you can’t wait to start the book all over again.The best way to sum up this book is to quote it directly:

“What a risk love was.  But the riskier the venture and greater the chance of failure, the higher the reward.” (p. 422)

My favorite thing about this book: the ending.  So many times I read books with similar story lines, and the woman feels the need to be in a relationship with a man.  She either begs for her husband to stay with her or rushes into another relationship.  Cami does neither, and I commend the author for writing such a strong and independent character.

Summertime is nearing an end.  Thirteen-year-old Henry hasn’t done much but watch television.  He lives with his mother Adele who, since the divorce from his father, very rarely wants to leave the house.  Her heart has been broken for some time, nearly everything she once lived for is now gone.

They live off of Campbells soup and TV dinners. However, one day they forced to leave the house and trek to the local discount store.  Henry is approached by an injured man who asks for help.  Henry & Adele’s lives are forever changed.  For the next several days, Henry learns things he’d never learned before:  how to play catch, how to play baseball, and most importantly, he learns a lesson about love.  He also learns that it’s important not to judge someone based on their past, but instead an individual should be judged by who they are now, and what they can provide in the future.

Labor Day is told from the viewpoint of Henry, a young boy on the cusp of young adulthood.  He’s still young, a bit naive about girls, and very sensitive emotionally.  The six days he spends with this stranger play a key role in his emotional and mental development.  It is not until he’s an adult that he really begins to comprehend just how important this weekend was. He gains an insight on life that many don’t discover in an entire lifetime.

Maynard does a stunning job portraying Henry’s character; she’s able to so accurately describe the attitudes and emotions of a teenage boy.  One couldn’t help but sympathize with Henry’s character.  We were all teens once; we experienced similar “growing pains.”

The secondary characters Adele and Frank are just as aptly detailed.  Initially, Adele’s character annoyed the heck out of me.  She seemed to have given up on life, completely forgetting that she had a son, a reason to live.  It wasn’t until I read a bit more about her that I realized the cause of her pain. Frank is an interesting character.  He has a pretty rough history and realistically one should have disdain for a man of his character.  But I couldn’t help but love him for what he gave to Adele and Henry.

The relationship this trio shares is initially perplexing, but ultimately rewarding. The storyline is captivating and unpredictable.  While reading this book my initial thought was “What!?” but by the end it was replaced with a “Wow!”  I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed this book; I fell in love with this odd little “family” and Maynard’s descriptive, flowing prose. I highly recommend this one; it would make the perfect beach or lazy summer day read.

Delilah Blue is a twenty-year old budding artist, so desperate to enter art school that she begins to model nude for art students in an attempt to raise money.  She lives with her father, Victor, in a quaint little cabin outside of Los Angeles.  They moved to LA when Delilah was eight.  Since Delilah, now  called Lila, could remember, they lived a pretty secluded life. Her father wouldn’t let her play with other children growing up, and when she got old enough to enter college, refused to let her apply for financial aid.  Victor always claimed he was just protecting Lila but it did get to be a bit extreme.

Victor begins to experience moments of memory loss, confusion, and eventually anger.  Lila insists that he go to the doctor, but he keeps putting it off.  Around the same time a ghost from Lila’s past makes a reappearance: her mother, who allegedly abandoned her when she was younger.  Lila must come to terms with her past, including her feelings of abandonment, while dealing with her father’s illness and her future as an artist.

I’ve been a fan of Cohen’s writing since I reviewed her book Inside Out Girl (click to read my review.  I must warn you it was VERY early in my blogging career and is quite pathetic!) In The Truth About Delilah Blue, she continues to write about strong, deep characters who must overcome some sort of battle.  It may sound a bit cliche but I guarantee it is not.  Her prose is detailed, developed, and fluid:

To have a mother like Elizabeth, and then lose her-not because she was struck by a car or swept out to sea by a dangerous current, but because she wasn’t sufficiently enamored by you to hang around-it left a hole in who you were.  You became one of those people who radiated worthlessness.  You became a living, breathing, walking–and in Lila’s case, drawing, painting, getting naked–tragedy.

You can’t help but feel for Lila and all the pain she is forced to endure.  Cohen’s skillful writing paints the scene right before your eyes.  The scene becomes multi-dimensional, you not only picture the setting and the characters but you can genuinely feel the emotion flowing from the pages.

Writing of Lila’s reuniting with her mother:

When a child spends a lifetime, or close to it, waiting for one specific moment, something magical and faraway with the power to set her entire world straight, she imagines that someday from up, down, and sideways…But there’s a fact about someday that you can’t possibly understand until it has settled upon you.  Someday you’ve doomed the moment you wished it into existence.  You’ve already ruined it.  By imagining it even once, you’ve created an expectation someday can’t possibly live up to.

It was hard not to like Lila’s character.  She was extremely strong-willed and did her best to keep control over the havoc that was attempting to take over her life.  The characters of her father and mother were a bit more difficult to like.  Her father seemed stubborn and unreliable while her mother was extremely flighty and self-absorbed.  My favorite character, other than Lila would have to be Kieran, Lila’s young half-sister.  I truly felt for her; she was a child but refused or was unable to behave as one.

I highly recommend reading The Truth About Delilah Blue.  For me, it helped me appreciate what I had growing up, the relationship I had with my parents, and my childhood overall.  It’s the perfect book club read.  In the back of the book, readers can learn more about the author, including a short interview and a list of the author’s favorite female characters in literature.
